Barack Obama won last nights debate. Or to be more precise, Mitt Romney lost it.
Thats obviously not the conventional view of the commentators or pollsters, who gave the GOP candidate a clear win. But that doesnt matter. He still lost.
There are three reasons why Romney experienced a soft implosion of his already tenuous electoral chances. First, there was no gotcha moment. Before the debate every political analyst, be they from the Left or Right, agreed that Romney had to land a knockout blow, which he didnt.
There was no major presidential gaffe. No glancing at watches, sighing or claiming there has never been any soviet domination of eastern Europe. Crucially, in the new media age, there was no YouTube moment. In fact, the one single moment I suspect most voters will remember from the debate was Barack Obama sending his wife Michelle greetings on their wedding anniversary.
The second problem for Romney was that while he failed to land a knockout blow, he kept piling into him. He was aggressive, too aggressive.
This is Romneys greatest weakness as a candidate. He lacks compassion. He comes across as one of those big businessman in old Westerns who turns up at the farm and explains to the widow that he needs to buy her land to make way for his new railroad, and if she knows whats good for her, shell take him up on his kind offer. CNNs post election poll found that two thirds of those who watched thought Romney put in the most effective performance. But only 46 per cent said they found him more likeable than Obama. Not only did Romney not land the knockout blow, he failed to close the empathy gap.....

I read that he lost his eye at the age of 11 during a brawl with a “thug.”
What in heck is this idiot smoking?
I don't know about that. I think his facts and figures were pretty startling to many people. And when Romney said Obama reminded him of his sons when they were younger, when they would keep repeating the same thing over and over hoping their dad would believe it - I thought that was pretty good.
The numbers coming out after last night’s debate will help make any accusation of a Romney win on Nov 6 “theft” at the polls laughable (MSM polling seems to have been weighting Obama’s numbers).
Hey Dan, kindly butt out ya’ twit. You keep your basket-case of a country and we’ll start fixing ours.
I saw your comment. You did good.
Also the 90 billion in one year on green losers was a gothca and it showed written all over Obama’s face. The truth of it embarrassed the hell out of him.
Well, some females anyway. This female was loving watching Obama crash and burn.
I also had a little poem
You have touched on something I believe has been working for zero from the beginning, pity. I think it was operating at a deep level, mostly in the subconscious minds of many people. Looking at his childhood and birth circumstances, there is much to pity. Because of this there could be some people actually more sympathetic to him after getting his ass kicked in a debate.
I told someone four years ago that pity and “compassion” are not good reasons to put someone in charge of the United States.
There is not one moment that I could point to as evidence that either candidate actually lost the election.
I can, I have watched everyone of these since 1988.
The killer last night was Obama You might want to move on to the next topic Jim.
Every debate has moments that resonate in voters minds. That one is going to stick. Obama looking to the supposed ref to rescue him. The common thread in most voters comments to pollsters is we want a leader who will show us how to get out of this mess
Romney showed he is a leader last night while Obama showed he is not.
Last night Frank Luntz, the gold standard of focus group pollsters, had 24 undecided voters watch the debate with him. 13 of the 24 were Obama 2008 voters.
More the half said the debate persuaded them to vote for Romney. Luntz said he has never seen results like that before.
It really was that bad for 0.
Dan Hodges you are an absolute jackass!
The guy is delusional.
Lehrer had to coach Obama on every significant point, and give him the words to repeat.
Obama makes an empty suit look effective.
Excellent!

Their asylum has no windows; it is across the Atlantic Ocean from any reality.
If he does well on the next debate, people will forget about last night, and they were successfully distracted from ever thinking about what he's done for the last 4 years.
British writers are sometimes very naive when writing about political events that happen in America. This is one of those times.
Panic time.
