"Real competition in the cable television industry is forcing change at long last. And we can thank the dawn of streaming content.

Time Warner Cable just axed the Ovation channel, and the cable giant threatens more channels may get trimmed in the coming months. But Time Warner Cable warns subscribers in an online notice today that there’s no guarantee it will continue to carry several other channels whose contracts expire soon including mainstays such as E!, Lifetime, and Starz, and a bevy of international services ... Former Vice President Al Gore’s Current TV also remains in danger, although it survived a possible year-end purge. Other channels Time Warner Cable identified as being under review include Encore, Music Choice, News 12, NHL Network, ShopNBC, Smithsonian HD, and Style Network.

Thanks for the link—I’ve been wondering who would be first to take a shot at it in earnest.

ROTFL. All those shopping channels?
I thought we only had QVC and HSN!

Seriously, I agree.. I think my household likely watches 20 or fewer channels on a regular basis.

Except: As cable companies lose TV income, they will up the prices on ISP/Internet service

The upside is the death of leftist cable news. No one going to pay for MSNBC or CNN in their alcarte lineup.

"eventually I will get around to Walking Dead"

When you do, you are in for such a treat. Best show on TV.

I wonder if there has been a REAL survey of the top ten channels people would remove from their cable bill.

I suppose they can't please everybody. But there is a large body of us who couldn't care less about professional sports in totality.

On the other hand, Starz, Encore and Smithsonian HD would be missed (if they are there at all now.) Let the "special interest" groups pay for their no-life choices and let the rest of us pay for our special interests. Let's see whose choices overload the current cable and satellite rates.

I primarily watch “Antenna TV”, “Me TV” and the new “COZI TV” channel. All of them feature classic TV shows from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I couldn’t tell you anything about programs on the broadcast networks.

Considering the apparent IQ of Americans, is it any wonder Ovation had not enough viewers?

Do you have a “happy marriage license”?

Or do you have an “I’m happy/She tolerates me” license?

How ‘bout the 35 infomercial channels in a row that Dish has on? If it weren’t for HDTV (wife) and the Food Network (I can’t get enough of Guy Fieri), I’d just get a set of rabbit ears and use Netfix.

Sorry dude, you gotta' turn in your "guy license" for that one.

"Dude" most likely knows more about how to make a relationship work than you do.

“Couple” shows != girlie shows. Shows the wife and I enjoy together include The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.

Probably 90%+ of people have bundled ISP and cable (with a landline often at nearly no cost. ( So, if you get rid of cable..will internet cost go up..also, will cable companies allow transmission of competition ( indivudal channels/programs)over their own system..

More likely the threat of of Intel's product will finally allow cable systems to start dropping making stations..they can be made available via Intel's a la carte system..if they can find a way to be profitable.

I read recently that about 50% of cable subscribers don't use/or want..the ESPN channels...( which cable systems often now bundle in with a whole bunch of other sports channels) as a "sports package".thus they are directly subsidizing those who want sports.

Another problem/issue..about 15% of my cable bill is various taxes and other fees..what happens to those? Will various governments accept the considerable drop in revenue?

I wonder if there has been a REAL survey of the top ten channels people would remove from their cable bill.

That would be fascinating, but seriously distorted. There are many more than ten that I have never watched, and couldn't recognize the call letters if you showed them to me. Perhaps ten times ten or more.

So my "top ten" would consist of the alphabet soup MSM, followed by professional sports channels, followed by soap operas and chick channels, "reality shows," wannabe entertainer shows, followed by exploitation shows, followed by shows like crab fishermen and "The dangerous world of accounting..."

I know, that's a lot more than 50 right there.
