Lewis Grizzard quoted in the New York Times, 1990.
Bump for reference.
I sure miss him.
“Life is like a dog sled team. If you aint the lead dog the view never changes.” - Louis Grizzard
One of my favorite lines by Grizzard was the title of one of his books:
“Elvis Is Dead And I Don’t Feel So Good Myself”
Loved this guy. I miss reading his column in the newspapers.
Does anyone remember reading about the guy who brought a girlfriend with him on a private plane? And how the plane crashed? And why?
Good times.
Grizzard was very big where I come from (Georgia), his column appearing in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
I was young when he died; I knew who he was but wasn’t very familiar with him before that. It was only a few years later I discovered his books and found archives of his articles on line.
He was a genuine treasure...great writer. If he were still alive, he’d be having a field day with Obama’s regime and the general state of the country.
R.I.P. Lewis still lots of material there. I guess that is part of the why one becomes a writer so your ideas have a chance to last longer than you do. This southerner by choice (former damn yankee) still loves your stuff.
I drive past the Lewis Grizzard Museum in Moreland GA every time I go down there to train my Labs.
Love all his books, especially “Elvis is Dead and I Don’t Feel so Good Myself” and “Shoot Low, Boys, They’re Riding Shetland Ponies”
I still miss him.
That dog would bite youuu...
In light of emerging racial sensitivities, Lewis proclaimed himself a S.A.W.B. - a Smart Ass White Boy.
My Daddy made him up a little badge and wore it for a while.
I so enjoyed Lewis Grizzard. And I’m a Yankee.
Thank you for reminding me about Grizzard :-).
I worked for a large law firm in Florida as a legal assistant. All of the legal assistants were female and then one day they hired this yankee guy. The ladies club held him at some distance simply because they were clueless as to what sort of critter a male yankee legal assistant might be.
One day I exchanged some papers with him on a case and he asked me “What is kudzu?”. I asked him why he wanted to know and he answered that he had been reading Lewis Gizzard and there were some things he couldn’t figure out.
I spent about an hour educating him and after that he became part of the crowd. The ladies forgave him both his gender and his northern origins, because obviously, anyone who will read Lewis Gizzard and try to understand is a good guy.
One of my favorite lines from him: I won’t get married again, I’ll just find a woman I can’t stand and buy her a house.

I loved to listen to Lewis Grizzard; his line about giving a house to a woman he didn’t like was my favorite.
