And when they finally could those things were basically destroyed...

Things are not so simple.

The Gulf Coast was nice. Not that I was there, but I’ve seen relatives’ pictures who were vacationing there. It didn’t have all the high rise hotels, but it had nice little cottages and small hotels.

Canal Street was a wonderful place. The shopping malls were either non-existent or nothing what they look like today. I was working downtown at the time and would go Christmas shopping after work at all the big dept. stores. There were nice little inexpensive restaurants, it was clean, and very safe. I miss it.

Wonder if the Mayflower Cafe is still in operation in downtown Jackson. Seemed like a nice little time-warp relic, when I was last there twenty years ago.

It’s depressing to see what hellholes so many of these cities became. Plus, since the 60s or so, there’s also been that bland corporate uniformity of fast-food joints, big-box stores, etc., which has covered the American landscape, snuffing out so much of the uniqueness that locales used to exude. Then, add how the populace itself has been in a race to look grungier and grungier, as if the ultimate fashion goal is to appear as though one just crawled out from under a rock.

Mayflower is still there.

Not a lib, far from it. Just pointing something out because I new someone would do it for me. Both breaks your heart and makes you mad to see what it has become.

“Well, keep in mind there was a large part of the population that could not go to those restaurants, shops, or go enjoy that lake.”

Eureka! This is the most educational comment I have read in months. You have given the perfect explanation of why the US health care system, that has been the best in the world, must be destroyed. It’s because some people don’t get to enjoy it.

Instead of preserving the good of it and making sure everyone has an opportunity to participate, we must destroy the whole thing, to make everyone suffer.

By this standard, Jackson of today is better than Jackson of 1938, because no one has anything nice and the center city has been destroyed. It’s completely clear now.

Well, just wait. Obamacare is going to do the same thing for medicine. Oh, how I love socialism!

the Edgewater

Torn down for what is a now old mall right after Camille

The Broad water and Buena Vista and Sun n Sand....all gone too

that was a great video clip. I saw many familiar landmarks from my youth — the castle-like appearance of Central High School, art-deco at it’s finest at the Standard Life building, Hawkins Field with the DC-3’s coming in for a landing, and of course, all of the gentlemen travelers wore a suit and hat. Capitol Street in its heyday was great to see. Also, I had forgotten how much like a prison Bailey School looks like! thanks for posting!

“No one is barefoot.”

As God is my witness, we did learn to wear shoes...whether we like them, or not.

I’m in the “not” category.

“I was thinking that if you lived in Mississippi at the time, and went to Jackson, it must have felt like going to New York City, compared to the rest of the State.”

Actually, at that time, Meridian was the hub of the state because of the railroad.
