Tablet Preferences
Vanity

Posted on 08/01/2013 2:13:59 PM PDT by pfflier

My wife and I are considering a tablet after deciding that a smart phone is overkill for our needs.

We are looking to spend $200-$300.

My wife likes to read alot and we are primarily looking for something that we can use, on the road, much like a windows platform lap top.

Given that criteria I lean towards a Kindle from what I've read. But, as always experience of Freepers is always welcome and always seems to cover bases we haven't considered.

Nook is dead. B and N waited too long to get into the market.

Yeah but right now the Nook HD+ 32GB 9” tablet is selling at $170. (Was $299) Still a great device - The brand just didn’t “take” in the tablet market.

The original color Nooks are likely to have a bad charger connection, it is likely to be buggy and often slow when used.

The new Intel cpu Nathalam(sp) is setup to give tablet like battery life and portability with windows 8.1pro, which gives all the windows rt functionality as well as a full blown computer capability. you can spend 200-300 on a tablet that will be only a media consumption device or $1300 on a dual use system. The question is if you will need a computer for video/photo editing or other full blown computer applications. BTW office 2013 has moved to a subscription model

Plus, a really excellent Blue Screen of Death!!!!! Office is going downhill nearly as fast as Windows has, too.

“The only two viable e-readers out there now is Kobo and Amazon. The advantage of the Kobo is that many public libraries can loan books through it.”

Can do the same thing with the kindle fire. I believe it is the overdrive media console app; at least that is what my local library uses.

“With Kindle you’re beholden to Amazon, with Kobo it’s Barnes & Noble.”

Not so much. The kindle can read numerous formats, especially the “free” formatted books from gutenburg, etc. Also, the fire makes PDFs a lot more readable that the normal kindle. As long as you can download it, it will read it.

Kindle Fire is what I got my wife. She loves to read and surf the web through WiFi at home. She downloads her books and reads them at night before bed and at lunch while at work.

She keeps in touch with the family on Facebook too.
She is rarely without it.

i just went through this. I bought a kindle fire hd 16g last week. I was gonna root it. But it just isn’t capable enough for me. No internal gps or gyros. So I bought a 2nd gen Nexus 7 32gb. I’ll sell you my kindle for $120. I PAID $170 last week.

I know Google is not always popular around here, but I have a first-generation Nexus 7 (got it for Christmas) and absolutely love it. I have both Google Play and Amazon Kindle apps on it so I can get books from either store. The thing I like about the Nexus is that compared to a Nook or Kindle, it’s got much less “bloatware” on it so if you want to and are comfortable doing it, it’s very easy to configure exactly the way you want it. If you’re going to use it primarily as an e-reader then a Kindle Fire might not be a bad choice, though I know nothing about them first-hand. I use mine for e-reading but also for watching video, social media (Twitter) and all sorts of other stuff.

The second-generation Nexus 7 out soon should be even better.

Got a samsung galaxy tab a few weeks ago. I also have the smallest kindle ereader. The ereader is great for carrying around all day. The galaxy has access to the same kindle books and is gently backlit for reading at night, watching netflix. Or browsing.

I like the two together.

The brand new Google Nexus 7 with 32 Gb (ASUS) was declared the bestest deal by several sources this week. I’m getting this baby while waiting for Chromebook V2.0.
