Giggles

You can feel safer today knowing that a no-kill animal shelter in Wisconsin was recently raided by a group of 13 heavily armed agents of the government. They were there to get Giggles, an illegally rescued baby deer. A shelter worker said the agents descended on the property “like a swat team” and soon the deer was being carried off in a body bag. Giggles is dead now and the world is somehow a better place thanks to our government helpers. Speaking of killing things, the logging industry in the western states was mostly killed by an environmental movement in the 80′s and 90′s. We were told that spotted owls were in decline and the only solution was to decimate the logging industry. Lumber mills closed. Logging towns died. But spotted owl populations declined anyway. It was later discovered that spotted owls were actually declining for another reason. A competitive species, the barred owl, was winning the competition for territory. This is called natural selection and has been part of the natural world from the beginning of time. But environmentalists like one owl more than the other, so there is a huge government effort to kill or remove approximately 3,600 barred owls. They are going in with guns. SNIP Can you think of any reason not to tackle big jobs like that? Think of what we are doing to correct the earth’s climate. Over the course of time, our planet has been much cooler and much hotter. It has had much higher CO2 concentrations and much lower. It has seen many ice ages with periods of warming in between. The ocean level has been much higher and much lower, many times. SNIP

And when did you stop beating your wife?

You put words in my mouth and then tell me I agree with you. I think you are sick and need help. You’ve accused this woman of deliberately trying to destroy the entire economy of the United States.

It’s fine with me if you can’t see anything wrong with an army of thirteen heavily armed men entering her property to carry out some law against keeping wildlife. It’s your country. Just be happy it’s still ok to keep a cat or a parrot.

Here’s a story about one that got away:

Loving Couple Was Faced With Prison Time for Rescuing a Baby Deer

Jennifer Counceller
Jeff and Jennifer Counceller have a soft spot for animals. Approximately two years ago, Jeff, a police officer, rescued an injured fawn he found on the porch during a rescue call. Jeff was prepared to place the animal back into the woods until he noticed its injuries. “I was gonna put her back in the woods, but I seen the injuries and I knew they were life threatening so I called Jennifer,” recalled Jeff. Jennifer, a nurse, felt compelled to save the baby deer. “I couldn’t let her just die there,” she said of the fawn that was affectionately named orphan Dani.

Because it is illegal to take in a wild animal in their homestate of Indiana, the couple called several deer habitats across the state to see if one of them could take Dani, but they were told that the habitats were too full at that point. The Councellers decided to go against the grain and nurse Dani themselves. They built a pen for the deer in their backyard, right near the woods, until the she could grow bigger and stronger. ”She would run around. She would play. We would feed her crack cord and deer chow and other things. Again, we knew someday that we needed to turn her loose,” explained Jeff. In July 2012, things took an ugly turn. The Councellers received an unwanted visit from an officer with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “He asked me if we still had the deer and I told him I did,” recalled Jennifer. ”He told me that I could maybe call Indianapolis and maybe get a rescue permit until you know, we could get her released back into the wild. So that’s what I tried to do,” Jennifer continued. When she called the DNR’s state office, she was turned down.

According to the Councellers, DNR officers told the couple Dani would have to be put to sleep because she had been around humans too long. .”She was a threat to society is what they said,” recalled Jeff. ”Their original plan was to shoot her with a rifle,” said Jennifer. ”Then they found a vet that was going to euthanize her and we had to pay the fee and they was going to let us bury her on our property,” she continued. The day officers were slated to euthanize Dani, someone left the gate to her pen open and she escaped. The Councellers said they did not open the pen that day, but believe someone who knew what was going to happen to Dani, did. Unfortunately, the grief for the Councellers was just starting. The couple was hit with an unlawful possession of a deer charge that could’ve landed them in jail for up to 60 days and cost them up to $2,000 in fines for rescuing Dani.

With a petition on Change.org and a Facebook page, the couple acquired national press for their situation. After more than 150,000 signatures on Change.org and more than 44,000 fans on Facebook, criminal charges against the couple were dropped in February 2013. “Thank you so much to those who have supported us and showed love and compassion for us…and for Dani, for she is the real winner in the end!” said Jennifer Councellor to she and her husband’s supporters. “Your kind words have helped us stay strong.”

So you are OK with smuggling potentially infected animals into uncontaminated areas?

Is that what you’re saying?

And speaking of putting words in peoples mouths, I have consistently said on this thread and others that it was heavy handed, that they should have tried two uniforms, or one uniform and a vet, not a whole herd of state wildlife and local LEOs.

I really don’t care about “Giggles”, but how much money do you think this black op set us back?

And ma'am? Where did I do this:

You’ve accused this woman of deliberately trying to destroy the entire economy of the United States.

I have never attributed malice to little miss treehugger. Naïveté, stupidity, failure to think rather than feel, short-sightedness, maybe. Malice? No.

Does it really make it all better that the cane toad was introduced with the very best of intentions? How do your kookaburras feel about that, lady?

Just as a aside, I donated blood this week, something I couldn't have done had I spent a bit more time in Europe. Why? Even now, some 20 years on, the threat of Mad Cow to the US blood supply is simply too great.

Little miss treehugger was at best oblivious to the threat.

Did you think it was malice? Is that why you're so touchy that you would see accusations of malice where there were none??

You are a classic example of a big talker who back-tracks when they have been exposed, and then accuses everyone else of some evil intent. I don’t give a d+mn about your wild-life laws, I’m fast becoming totally disinterested in how the US handles it’s problems, that last comment I posted, shows just what’s going on and you haven’t noticed. That couple, her husband is a police officer, were NOT planning to move the animal accross State lines, or infect the entire continent of the US of A, or destroy your cattle industry...

THEY FOUND A BABY ANIMAL ON A PORCH. TENDED IT. AND NEARLY ENDED UP IN JAIL.

If you think you are defending your country by attacking me, think again. The citizens of the LAND OF THE BRAVE AND THE FREE have become law-breakers and prisoners, just as Ayn Rand described.

Yet you would rather demonize the obessional animal-rescue woman, then face what is going on. And btw, yes, my own mother catnapped, had the animals neutered and spayed and sold them for a small fee (to recover the cost) to new owners. She was obsessional. But when she took on the care of some native animals, she had the right to expect that she wouldn’t be visited BY A SWAT TEAM.

Take a pill. You are hysterical.

YOU WROTE:

Little miss scofflaw was conspiring to illegally transport an animal from a known infected area to an uncontaminated area, an animal possibly infected with a chronic debilitating disease that has no diagnostic test, no vaccine, no cure, poorly understood routes of infection, of which there is strong evidence that it is transmitted from doe to fawn either in utero or via milk. A disease that is a close cousin of Mad Cow and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, and can be transmitted to livestock.

And where precisely did I attribute any thought processes or motivations to her?

I was mute on her thoughts, I only commented on her actions.

I can't observe her thought processes, but she did conspire to illegally move a potentially infected animal out of a quarantined area and into a non-contaminated one.

Like it or not that's the facts, ma'am.

Heck, I wouldn't take lemons out of my own back yard to work because of a Mediterranean Fruit Fly quarantine.

Nobody's ever had their brains slowly rot out due to Med flies, something you can't say for prion diseases...

And then you made this statement without providing a source:

Do they mention the the deer was from an area infested with chronic wasting disease, and the little miss treehugger was going break quarantine and send it to an area free of the disease?

Give it up, if you had been in charge, they would have blown up her house. You would have convinced them she was a danger to the entire country and you would all be safer if she was eliminated along with the diseased animal she was harbouring.

I don’t give a d+mn about your wild-life laws

That much is crystal clear.

Sorry I hit a nerve with your mom...

Oh, and speaking of hysterical, where did I mention infecting the entire USofA?

I covered the FACT that ONE state, Indiana, was disease free and deliberately moving an infected animal could imperil that state's livestock.

In point of fact I was wrong on that statement. It's Illinois, not Indiana.

I did discuss the FACT that one can contract plague, you know, THE BLACK DEATH, that plague, the very one that wiped out a third of the entire population of Europe, anywhere in the western US due to the neglect of the city council in San Fransisco in failing to quarantine Chinatown in the 1860's.

Maybe you're happy if we live in a world where preventable diseases are allowed to spread far and wide with no restraints.

Show the courage of your convictions, lobby to eliminate all of Australia's quarantine laws. If it's good enough for you to wish on my home, it should be good enough for your own home.

*shug* If you weren't so busy reading little miss treehugger's propaganda, and rushing to the keybord to complain about how evil Americans are, you could have found this story:

Wisconsin DNR Secretary Stepp says fawn had to be euthanized

Or maybe found this FR post by a local FReeper.

But really, who can resist a change to diss America?

You sound like you would be in favor of the criminally negligent medical practices that have caused 50 million people to die from AIDS across the world.

I've been studiously avoiding drawing any comparisons between the SF city council of the 1860's and the 1980's.

How many people would be alive today if the do-gooder bleeding heart liberals had closed the bathhouses until we could figure out what was spreading/causing AIDS?

Naaaah, that wouldn't be kind to all those gay men...

Say, there’s an outbreak of OXA-232-type carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae in South Korea.

Don’t these poor people deserve to be treated in Melbourne’s best hospital?

If not, why not?

Is this the result of that dreaded disease carried by infected wild life, that rots the brain? No wonder you find it so frightning. We've gone from one abandoned baby animal which may or may not have been infected, to me being accused of being in favour of a disease that, as you maintain, caused the deaths of 50 million.

Is hysteria the first symptom?
