Dental Implant - Requesting Advice
1/12/2014 | Gortklattu

Groucho Marx once said that Abscess make the heart grow fonder, but now it means that I will be losing a troubled molar and am looking at getting an implant to replace the tooth.

Have any of you had an implant?

Do you have any Stories or Advice to pass on to your fellow freepers?

I’ve been wondering when “cruise ship” health care and dental care would become reality. Take a trip to Mexico, start the care when you leave territorial waters.

We have family/friends who've had implants with great success. (Much different technology today, than decades ago.)

Like many other posters have said...take the time to research and talk to different surgeons who specialize in implants - and have for many years.

Also ask to speak to patients who've had the procedure. Ask them how they've done and really look at the work, if you can. Ask the patient if they would use this doc/do procedure again. A good implant surgeon will not mind you doing this.

I'm not sure I would want to get work done on a cruise ship... those things are floating petri dishes!

That price sounds about right. My surgery ran about half of that. Then, later, I had a tooth made and attached, which accounted for the other half of the cost. Prices will vary from place to place of course.

My wife had some 5 years ago. I’m not sure how severe your case is, but her process took a while (cadaver bone had to be placed in the jaw and given time to ‘take root’ etc.). But the resulting implants had been fine - no problems whatsoever.

Had a bad molar a few years back (I’m 64) and before the
dentist pulled it, he asked me what I wanted to do and I said
nothing. I’ve had a gap back there for a while and its never
bothered me except when I get a peanut stuck in it but that’s not a problem as I can’t really eat peanuts anymore anyways (or can’t eat fried clams or any fast food or most anything I used to enjoy) Ah! the golden years.

Make sure to find out if the list price includes everything: implant placement, abutment and crown. Ask how much extra bone augmentation is, if it's required (sometimes the jaw needs to be thickened to support the implant).

They are far, far better than a bridge, so best of luck.

FWIW, I had trouble with a wisdom tooth (the very back molar) for years. Finally simply had it pulled.

It was such a success, when the lower one needed a filling some years later I had that one pulled too.

I don’t even notice the fact they are missing, except when I go in for my regular cleanings, when the next teeth forward are always in better condition than they ever been.

I’m just sorry I didn’t have those money pit teeth out years earlier.

My friend, an immaculate woman told me that her dr said that research is showing they do not last indefinitely. Now that they have the experience and the time, a number of people should plan on replacing them in X years.

Implants don’t “wear out”. The surrounding tissue fails before the implant.

Actually I'm in SoCal, between Thousand Stumps and Ventura. If it's any help I can definitely recommend Michael Morrissette who did mine. He's one of the best:

Dental Implants

Wishing you the best.

No advice - had one a few years ago - expensive and a long process - took several months for the mounting post to stabilize in order to install the “tooth” - everything turned out fine....
