Go back and look from where it took off. Knowing from where/when it departs is easy enough information for locals there to cue acqs and trackers.
Precisely. That is how we were tracked flying out of Aviano. O'Grady was taken out by an SA-6 in the same area we flew over. Our job was to enforce the Dayton Peace Accords and to monitor all SA operation in Bosnia/Herzegovina.
Every time we launched we had a crowd of people across the street from the departure end of the runway. Some cheered, some help protest signs. A couple of others took photos and wrote notes. They were the ones we knew were calling their radar buds in Bosnia.
