My old laptop running vista is having the cpu max out when no programs are running
I have been cleaning up the hard drive from all old programs, too, stopped almost everything from starting up, but my cpu just maxes out
running the resource monitor, my rundll32 is using 90% and more of the cpu
how do I find out which tsr or stray program is doing this?
I need to know what to shut off or just outright delete...
I have disappointed with every replacement computer I have ever gotten since I got mg first work Windows PC (replaced OS2 Warp) and my Dell laptop running XP. everything since then felt like wasted money.
Gamers like having a good graphics card. If you need high-end, I hear good things about Alienware.
I don't do games. I got a HP quad core for work with Win 7 and like 8G of RAM or something. when I got it, it was cool. 5 months later, everyone in the organization got one that is 0.2 ghz faster.
I had this happen a little earlier in the year. Download/upgrade to the latest malware bytes and run it in safe mode with networking. It’s an insidious “bot” adware or something like that.
I am no expert but had a similar problem on my last computer an HP with Norton which was Vista upgraded to windows 7.
I found a bad flash player add-on to explorer was causing some of it.
The problem is you risk a burned out motherboard from overuse.
Did you try bringing it up in safe mode?(I know this is basic)
It could be auto update. Try turning that off temporarily.
do you know if i can roll back drivers if there's a problem or does it overwrite them?
HP COMPAQ KNOWN PROBLEM WITH 80% TO 100% CPU - POWER CABLE!
My wife encountered exact same problem with her HP Compaq 6710b. I just about pulled all my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong.
COME TO FIND OUT...
HP Compaq laptops sometimes will max out CPU when AC adapter partially fails / doesn’t deliver enough juice.
DIAGNOSE: RUN LAPTOP ON BATTERY AND SEE IF IT SPEEDS UP! IF IT DOES, REPLACE THE AC ADAPTER!
Try Glary Utilities. It’s a suite of tools that works.
Run Housecall:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
It will remove any viruses it detects.
Download and run SuperAntiSpyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Download and run Malwarebytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/
What about network traffic ?
Network traffic doesn’t affect CPU usage.
Basically all malware uses the network.
If you physically unplug the network connection while this is going on, you may see cpu usage level change.
I googled
rundll32 vulnerabilities
and found that it is a prime target of malware.
Run superantispyware from http://www.superantispyware.com
Download the free edition, select the trial pro version during the install. Make sure to uncheck the extra toolbars they try to get you to install.
It may be spyware you have that is causing this.
> do you trust them??? i just installed it and it said i have 12 drivers out of date and am skeerd sh!tless to update them for fear of incompatibilities...
do you know if i can roll back drivers if there’s a problem or does it overwrite them?
Have been using the program for 3 years now with no problems. You can uninstall the “driver booster” component if you want but honestly I never had a problem with it. I go into settings and make it where it doesn’t load when Windows starts up. The less things that load the better for me. You might check and remove all toolbars and any antivirus programs then reinstall them after you clean up your hard drive. If you have Norton or McAfee Antivirus they are notorious for making systems come to a crawl; almost worst than any virus you would get...
good Idea
Make a list of running services in the back ground. Then reboot in safe mode and compare safe mode services. There are probable dozens of oddball serrvices that are viruses or othr grey area junk that can go. Also make sure your hard drive isn’t full.
try a system restore to a date prior to your trouble starting.
I got that notice and the high cpu use when my anti-malware program was fighting my anti-virus, trying to quarantine all my anti-virus files. Ended up deleting the anti-malware program and then restoring the quarantined files, which were separate from the program, by hand.
so far, it is running fine, the most new changes were the autodesk programs, at least until I started typing this
now it maxed out again...(sigh)
