U.S. official: Sgt. Bergdahl wants to be called private first class
CNN's Political Ticker ^ | June 8, 2014 | Jason Seher

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was promoted while held prisoner by the Taliban, said he wants to be recognized by his old rank, according to a senior U.S. official.

"In his mind, he's a Pfc," the official told CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr on Sunday.

Now in the beginning of the lengthy road to reintegration after his exchange for five Taliban commanders previously held at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba, Bergdahl is letting those around him know he still feels like a Pfc, regardless of his in-absentia promotion. The U.S. official could not confirm to CNN whether Bergdahl has resumed wearing his uniform but added that doing so is part of the standard reintegration process.

The Pentagon issued a brief statement Sunday, declining to comment on Bergdahl's recovery process beyond saying the Defense Department continues to evaluate Bergdahl, provide him with medical and reintegration care and remains intent on conducting a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

"Our focus remains on providing him with the care he needs," Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.

The few details emerging around the soldier's recovery after his five years in captivity are a prelude to what's shaping up to be a week defined by confrontation over President Barack Obama and his administration's move to exchange Bergdahl for five Taliban hardliners previously determined too high a risk to release....

I don’t care what he says or what he wants unless he does so at his court martial.

Private shiat-head seems more appropriate.

He was promoted to Specialist, E-4 and later Sergeant, E-5 in absentia, which is, as I understand it, is the process for prisoners of war, which is how John McCain, for example, emerged from Hanoi as a four-striper. He was about to be promoted to Staff Sergeant, E-6, but since he was returned it seems that was put on hold.

I’d like to call him “The Late Bowe Bergdahl”.

Everything we are hearing is NOT true (so far as from the lamestream and the white house). It is "narrative" and damage control. This guy is a freaking traitor and this administration stepped in it big time by using this dirtbag as cover so they could release the taliban dream team. Just like a "video" provoked Benghazi, this little asshole is cover for other activities.

Congress better wake up (those with D's after their names as well); this admin is rogue and it will steer resources against those standing in it's way. (BUT, I would enjoy seeing a dem taking out a dem).

McCain was a naval aviator. As such... he was an officer, and a gentleman. Congress said so.

If you mean 4 striper as in Navy Captain... you might want to make that clear.

McCain was NOT enlisted.

Most veterans probably understood my sentence, but yes, I meant Captain, O-6, which is frequently referred to as a four-striper. BTW, there have been enlisted, NCO and warrant aviators and aviation crewmembers in all the branches of the military at different times and the people who fly drones remotely now are mostly enlisted.

I had a buddy in basic who was from Chicago and he was a little off. Well more than a little. He went from a 5’10” 145 pounder to a 5’10” 185 pounder with muscle on muscle because he could not keep his mouth shut and set a record for pushups, squat thrusts and jogging around the barracks with a full pack. As it turns out he would need that muscle because he ended up in Leavenworth for going AWOL and stealing our battalion Colonels mustang when we were sent to Fort Hood together. 5 years. I doubt Berghdal will ever do time.

After the AAC, most aviators have been officers, and gentlemen, according to congress (except for those flying helicopters, who are just weird).

But it's best to make things clear across the cross-cultural divide of the different branches. A 4 striper to someone Army, Marine, or AF isn't an officer.

And it turns out that most of the AF drone pilots are 1Lts and Captains with crappy eyesight, from what I'm hearing from the dining facility.

My thinking all along was that his hospitalization was for reverse adjustment and public image of a self-centered person’s conversion to an Islamic want to be like his dad. Being a WWII vet with Pacific experience I was wondering how and why this guy was given sgt. stripes after he deserted. Something stinks from hell to the sky about this situation. The fact that Bloomberg has his wealth stashed in Qatar just adds to the perplexity. I can’t believe or put words or actions of Muslims as to truth as to such situations. Same goes for all those department chiefs especially that Bush compatriot shifty eyed CIA chief Brennan.

A) Most Army pilots are warrant, not commissioned officers. (B)Prior to the Korean War, the Navy, Marines and to a lesser extent the Army had “flying sergeants” or “flying petty officers” in many slots because it was cheaper. Most enlisted rank insignia have a maximum of three chevrons (”stripes”) and then rockers below for further promotion, right? So how could four-striper be confused for NCO?

I thought he wasn’t able to speak English? Wear his uniform? He is not worthy of it. Here we go with ‘Bowe is a poor victim of brainwashing,’ all to cover Obama’s behind for the lousy and illegal trade.

“How did he get promoted to SGT? He was not able to appear before a promotion board, so how in the world is he promoted to E-5?”

i thought i read very recently that he was being considered for another promotion now that he is out of Afghanistan. all of this is being done in order to buy Bergdahl’s cooperation as they build the false narrative of why it was necessary to rescue him via an exchange for 5 known terrorists.

Most Army pilots fly helicopters, not jets.

It's after the Korean war. I know my military history because I passed the test. I'm well aware of 'flying sergeants'.

SSgt in the AF is 4 stripes, and that comes after 3-4 years of no overt criminal activity, passing the CDCs, and taking the NCO course.

It's a new world. Imagine my shock after getting out in 1984 and re-enlisting after 9/11.
