The world's first climate-controlled city: Dubai to build biggest mall on the planet....
The London Daily Mail ^ | July 6, 2014 | Sarah Gordon

Dubai is already home to the tallest tower in the world, so it was just a matter of time until the glitzy emirate planned another record-breaking construction.

Its next project involves building the largest shopping mall on the planet, complete with climate-controlled streets, the world's largest indoor theme park and 100 hotels and apartments.

In fact, the ambitious emirate has dubbed the project a 'temperature-controlled pedestrian city'.

Occupying 48 million square feet, the Mall of the World will also contain health resorts, theatres, a Celebration Steet modelled on the Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona and 'retail streets network' that will stretch over four-and-a-half miles.

The grand project is part of Dubai's bid to become a year-round tourism destination, despite soaring temperatures in summer that can reach nearly 50C.

The new mall, which will be a city-within-a-city, will be the emirate's chance to attract visitors even in the height of the summer, by providing a completely climate-controlled experience.

The shopping mall itself will occupy eight million square feet, housed below a glass dome, with other attractions extending beyond the central shopping area.

In the cooler winter months, the dome will open, allowing people to shop in the fresh air, closing as the summer heats up....

A glass dome....in the desert.
One power failure and they’ll fry like ants.

How much oil do they have?

Almost none. They have diversified away from oil, and have diversified themselves away from it. They remodeled themselves as the arab Hong Kong/Disneyland, and built mega projects using near slave labor to lure oil money from other arab countries.

Or more likely, how many Chinese?

As the Chinese become the big hog at the mid east oil trough, the ragheads will find their new best customer a bit more demanding to deal with than Euro and US.

I haven’t been inside a mall in roughly 10 years. Malls have the highest possible price for anything you’d want. Plus, your chance of being robbed, mugged or rapped is higher there than most other places. The music is annoying and the kids are dangerous.

I’ve read that retail outlets like we have now will be extinct within 20 years. The labor and fixed costs of a brick and mortar store are too high compared to evolving means of shopping like Amazon.

I hate it when I get rapped. Eminem shows up, won't leave, keeps talking about his closet...

Never been there but I’ve read it was built with indentured servants and slave labor from Asia. It’s also know for sex trafficking for the wealthy. Sounds like an exotically creepy place.

He did follow that by saying that the music is annoying and the kids dangerous. I would certainly associate that with getting rapped.

You don’t travel outside the USA very much do you? There are some pretty amazing places that are NOT in the USA. Just got back from Colombia and it was pretty amazing. And I’m seriously considering taking a job in the UAE. Contrary to most US citizens the world does not revolve around the USA. About 96% of the world’s population lives in other places. 4 billion people live within a 7 hour flight of Dubai and hundreds of millions of them are upwardly mobile. Additionally, Dubai like the Vegas of the Middle east. They do require modesty but you can still get alcohol and cigarettes if you choose.

The young people(usually) who cause problems like terrorism get dealt with. The crown Princes and Sheiks understand that its bad for business and commerce when people are doing things like terrorist acts. Many of the leadership roles in large companies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are occupied by westerners who have the ability to run those companies. And many of the large commercial construction projects are designed by western companies. Example: the Burj. Khalifa was designed and engineered by Skidmore, Owens, and Merill LLP. of Chicago, Illinois.

Point being. Not all Nations outside the USA are 3rd world cesspools. I turned off CNN and Fox News years ago and started traveling the world to see it with my own eyes. You’ll really be surprised with what you see.

CHEERS fellow freeper! ;)

It's my understanding that there are only about 300K *citizens* of the UAE while there are something like 5 or 6 million residents.Yes,there are many Filipinos who work there, often in hotels and restaurants. And there are many, many *very* dark skinned (but not African) people you see there...mainly on construction crews and road building projects.I believe that they're mainly from Pakistan and Bangladesh and I've read more than once that they're not very well treated. However,I got talking to a shuttle van driver from Pakistan who said that Dubai was paradise for him compared to what was available at home.He said that he was supporting several relatives still living in his small village.

Sex trafficking? I think I see wealthy Saudis doing that.God knows that half the Ferraris and Bugatti Veyrons I saw last March in the valet parking area of the Mall of Dubai had Saudi plates on them.

Dubai is actually doing some fairly smart things. The Emir has said that he knows that the wealth from oil is not going to last forever, and he wants to diversify Dubai’s economy while they have resources to do it. Hence the focus on tourism, Dubai Ports World, and such.

Kinda depressing to think about.
