IIRC, Historian Robert Conquest estimated that Stalin killed as many as 40 million.

Liberals excoriated him until the fall of the Soviet Union when Russian scholars confirmed his numbers.

Add in the millions of Russians killed in WW1, the Russian Revolution and the subsequent civil war that followed . And you're quite right about Stalin and his purges, a time chillingly called “The Terror’’. I think Stalin's purges had a profound and traumatizing effect on the Russian people and their collective psyche that even today still haunts them.

This is what frustrates me about our Media and Academia.

Hitler and the Nazis are rightfully demonized throughout all of history, and rightfully so. You can’t make it through grade school, much less college without hearing about all the atrocities committed by Germany during that period.

However, Nazi atrocities pale in comparison to what Communists have done throughout the 20th century. Its not even a comparison. Yet tyrants like Stalin, Mao, Lenin, Che, Castro, Mugabe, and other of their ilk are given a complete pass by Historians, the Media, and Academia. Communists mass murders are almost completely white washed and revised.

Just look at what’s going on in Ukraine. I haven’t seen a single story touching on the past genocide committed against the people of Ukraine by Russia since Putin decided Russia needed to retake parts of that nation.

Communism is the greatest evil the world has ever known but you wouldn’t know it from listening to most historians and the huge double standards put in place for communist atrocities.
