New book details alleged shocking Secret Service corner cutting, imperiling America’s leaders

If a Secret Service agent were to tell you that candidate Obama or President George W. Bush have attended events in a post-9/11 era in which magnetometer screening was waived because of overflow crowds, would this shock you?

What if said agent were to note that when Vice President Biden threw out a first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles season opener in April of 2009 before 48,607 fans, literally none of them had been screened with magnetometers, while Biden himself was not wearing a bulletproof vest?

Author Ronald Kessler alleges these stories and many more in his new book, “The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents” — allegations which if true will leave readers to marvel at how our nation’s most senior political leaders have remained safe to date.

...To let people into events without magnetometer screening, to scrimp on magnetometers to the point where Mitt Romney felt forced to deliver campaign speeches to unscreened crowds in [overflow] parking lots, to bow to Joe Biden’s wishes to be without the nuclear football or adequate protection in Delaware, to divert agents from protecting the president [President Obama specifically] when he takes off in Marine One from the White House so they can protect the Secret Service director’s assistant, to allow Bradley Cooper’s vehicle into a secure restricted area without screening before Obama was to give a speech, and to disregard firearms requalification are each so egregious that few past government scandals are comparable because so much is at stake.

So what was Bradley Cooper taking into the WH?

I remember my great-uncle telling me he used to regularly see VP John Garner (Roosevelt’s VP in the 1930’s) out for lunch with his secretary at a tavern in downtown DC. No one thought it was a big deal.

Probably a sign-post of when we began to change from a limited-government republic to an Empire with a ruling class.

Someone was talking about Harry truman the other day. When he left office harry drove in his own car back to Missori. No secret service protection.

These prima-donna meglomanics we have in office now don’t deserve protection. They should fend for themselves just like the rest of us do.

There is always some one who is willing to replace them.

I saw this guy Ronald Kessler on the news yesterday being interviewed and he said the one job the SS likes doing the least is guarding HRH Hitlery, said she is abusive as hell, “which is surprising being that she claims to support the middle class” ha ha. He said Bill is really nice to them but Hitlery is hell. I was saying to myself “That’s because she’s a demon”.

I can just imagine what goes on:

“SS I WANT YOU TO GET ME COFFEE!!”

“Madam secretary, would you like sugar with that?”

“WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE!!”

Exactly. My dad working for the railroad met him late at night at a railstation in Missouri. Traveling alone.
This bunch today essentially lives in a gated community and looks out at us.

And they go beyond protection and become political as well, protecting the politician from protesters, etc. And their motorcades are an insult and kill a cop or two a year. They drive at unreasonable speeds, in convoys or 15-20 cars and SUVs. They already are nearly doubling the speed limit. The motorcycle escorts have to nearly be stunt drivers to leapfrog ahead.
once or twice a year, one gets killed. They don’t even stop, of go to the hospital.

They aren’t really as important as they to think.

Exactly. No other Western democracy allows its political leaders to indulge in the trappings of monarchy as we have. What Kessler sees as a negative, I see as a positive, some semblance of our republican past. In our lurch to authoritarianism, Kessler sees the common sense treatment of a celebrity, Bradley Cooper, as some sort of national security threat. The problem is not lax security for our political elites, but the praetorian guard we have allowed to surround them.

Not to disagree, but I value our Secret Service agents more than I value the thugs they are currently protecting. I don’t want to see our Secret Service in danger, even if that means they duck when someone shoots at an anti-American druggie nominally under their protection.

I recently re-watched the attempt on President Reagan’s life.

Things have changed in the last 30 years. The press (and public) was allowed within a few feet of both Reagan and his limo, out on a public street. Today the press would be kept 20 yards away, in the name of security, with a platoon of secret service agents holding a rope line.

I was also fascinated with the DC cops in the video - they looked like ordinary people in uniforms. No buzz cuts, roided out arms, etc.

Things were obviously too lax when Reagan got shot....but I think we’ve taken it way too far now.

I love Harry Truman. Although he was a Democrat, he also was a common, decent man. He was a farmer and a clothing salesman. He lived out his days in the same house he owned his whole life. Having a limited government allows familiarity with one's leaders. Having a huge Empire run from Washington gives you a self-appointed nobility behind castle walls.

He took the train back to Missouri. He never owned his home in Independence, he lived in Bess’s mother’s house.

I’m guessing Truman figured he was the only one to ever drop atomic bombs on somebody - who was going to mess with HIM!? (”Go ahead - make my day” - Oh that was another Harry.)

Harry S. Truman did not ride a subway to work while president. DC most certainly had no subway then. In fact, as president he had no need to ride to work. He lived in the White House and in the Blair House across the street while the WH was undergoing extensive renovations.

HST’s SS protection detail was much smaller than JFK’s.

When Puerto Rican terrorists attempted to assassinate him at the Blair House HST was so pissed off he had to be held back from attacking the wounded perps. Stephen Hunter has a very good book about it.

Lol. I don’t know where that notion came from. I have to be confusing stories I heard years ago. I need to eat more blueberries.
