How New Yorkers Prep for 'Doomsday': New Yorkers worry about natural disasters, terrorist threats
Newser ^ | August 25, 2014 | Neal Colgrass

New Yorkers are preparing for "doomsday" in a way that doesn't involve guns, bunkers, or earmarked pages in Revelations, LiveScience reports. Survivalists at one group, NYC Preppers, are planning to safely flee the city in case of a natural disaster or terrorist attack. "They simply don't have the space to build a bunker," says sociologist Anna Bounds, who is studying the survivalists. She says they devise escape routes (including by kayak), keep the car filled with gas, and figure out which home appliances are likely to work in different emergencies. They also take long walks to practice carrying a "bug-out" bag, which weighs between 20 and 25 pounds and contains survival gear like water, food, face masks, compasses, duct tape, and water filtration systems.

Just who are these people? Their political views vary, but they tend to be people of color who have seen disasters like Hurricane Katrina and know how slowly governments can respond to emergencies. They're often into sustainability and local foods, which Bounds admits is a far cry from survival in nature: "What you have to understand about New Yorkers is we're used to convenience and we're used to immediate gratification," she says. "Roughing it, for us, is not having takeout." By contrast, the FBI says a Doomsday prepper in Florida has admitted to stockpiling weapons and creating boobytraps in preparation for a Biblical apocalypse, the Tampa Bay Times reports. In exchange for turning himself in, Martin Winters received Gatorade, fries, cheeseburgers, and dry shoes, says another Times article.

Some are, some aren’t (I’ve seen cammo or earth tone ones for fishing at places like Bass Pro Shops and Cabellas).

But easy enough to keep a large can of Krylon or Rustoleum in the right cammo shade on hand ...

emergency management said only half of the CA population had any preps for an earthquake

That's about 45% more than I would have thought.

Walk across a bridge? To where, the Bronx? Good luck with that...

Remember everyone walking across the bridge during 9/11. If something happened so they couldn't cross a bridge, they'd be stuck. That's the case in many areas of the country.

She is.

OTOH, a remote island would be fairly safe. Less chance of zombies making their way across the waters.

True. That makes the difference between how quickly you bolt vs shelter in place (then bolt).

It’s only possible to mitigate risk, but not eliminate it. Water is going to be the best way to una** NYC. In a perfect world I’d have a small and well-outfitted sailboat stashed away at one of the NYC yacht basins (NOT docked at a marina), would use the kayak to paddle out to it, raise anchor and go.

But if the threat is a tidal wave chances are the boat will be destroyed before I can get to it (assuming I’d even try) But I still have the kayak. Which, assuming I can shelter in place high enough to survive, I can still use to get away. Which is a better option than trying to walk out.

Hey, I will remember that, and although I am south, it might be just as necessary to be prepared to use the water....thanks.

“After hurricane Ike hit the coast near Houston the highways out of town were completely blocked by fleeing Houston people. “

The roads out of Manhattan are completely blocked several times a week from 4:30 - 8:30 pm as it is.

In the event of a radiological or chemical attack the only way anyone is getting out of NYC by car is if they are already in their cars at an approach to a tunnel or bridge when the attack happens.

I would suggest everyone keep an inflatable boat with oars for a river or water get away as another freeper said, who has a kayak for said escape. I do not live up there but will use his advice where I am.....it makes sense, just have a manual air pump just in case the electricity is off....a small boat.

Houston has pretty bad afternoon/evening traffic too but we don’t usually sit on the freeway for 9 hours moving less than a mile like my brother and his wife did before Ike. I know several others who faced that too. Some of them stuck it out but others turned around and went home.

Thoughts:

Tampa Bay Times is a local Leftist fishwrap (I wouldn’t ever wrap fish with it, it makes the fish stink). ‘Nuff said...

As I’ve stated here and elsewhere, you will only have hours once an event occurs before the Gibsmedats come boiling out of the urban kraals. If you haven’t gotten out by now, your only hope is to shelter in place and go Gray Man until the crisis passes (if it ever does). Does anyone else remember 2003 and the Northeast Blackout? The overhead shots of every Manhattan bridge jammed with humanity? It’ll be more like Gotham City in “Dark Knight Rises”...

Noo Yawkers are notorious for ruining every community they enter, whether PA or FL. They’re known as “river jumpers” to those in PA, and yes, the locals have fun drawing up plans for dealing with the oncoming swarms. I recall reading reports right here on FR’s Sandy Live Thread about the refugee situation from the city.

“Preppers are people of color”??? In all my encounters, I have met three Hispanic and one Phillipino prepper - and THAT’S IT. The writer is violating the “preppers-are-white-racist-conservatives” meme put forth by NatGeo, and officially sanctioned by DHS, SPLC, and all the other Leftist operatives.

The only, single hope for prepping in a major metropolitan area is to GET OUT. And given the known, proven scenarios of what happens when disaster befalls, the key is knowing WHEN TO LEAVE. There are those of us out here who man the walls and keep watch, here and elsewhere.

“Watchman, what of the night?”

In fact I've personally relocated out of Tampa myself and am now living in my BOL in the hinterlands of W. TN. (My back yard is now a corn field, and I now have space for a large garden, rabbits and chickens - coming soon!)

I really enjoyed my many years in Tampa, but I found myself increasingly surrounded by FLA ("Future Looters of America"), so it was no longer tenable. I hope our nation fixes itself soon so that I can return to the city for which I have developed such a fondness.

In the meantime, where DID I put that fishing rod?

Agreed. An urban environment is not conducive for survival, especially with the many now "probable black swan" events on the horizon. If you have a place to go then knowing what is going on is paramount. You need to leave before the crisis hits or be forced to fight the sectarian violence created by the government.

If you have no where to go but choose to flee, then you are nothing more than a refugee. Being a refugee is the worst and least survivable position to be in. It is far better to hunker down and go grey.

"NYC Preppers, are planning to safely flee the city in case of a natural disaster or terrorist attack."

Har! That would make a Simpson episode if they haven't already done it. NYC Preppers fleeing? Really? Where? Think massive traffic jams and people resorting to survival existence. There is NO escape for city dwellers. They will either die from lack of resources or from developing gangs/organizations. Watch any post-apocalyptic movie and most have it right.

The suburbs may have a chance if they organize (think small street and/or cul-de-sac with patrols), but the rural communities are probably the ones to survive.

Please, the inner cities will be the first to fall with all the rioting and looting. Doesn’t matter if someone is good shape; no weapons no chance.
