Six vessels fom the Russian North fleet have left their base in Severomorsk in the Barents Sea and set off for the New Siberian Islands, where a military base under reconstruction will start functioning later this year.

“The major goal of the latest expedition of the North fleet ships to the Arctic is to deliver personnel, equipment and property of the North fleet’s tactical group, which starting this year is going to fulfill military service at the New Siberian Islands on a permanent basis,” said the North fleet commander, admiral Vladimir Korolyov.

The six vessels currently on their way to the Arctic are submarine chaser “Admiral Levchenko”, two large landing ships – “St George” and “Kondopoga”, the tanker “Sergey Osipov”, rescue tug “Pamir” and the lifting-and-mooring vessel “Aleksandr Pushkin”.

This is the "New" base the Canadians were complaining about last year.

There was an article last week that said the Russians were going to rebuild the former Soviet airbase at Wrangell Island (near Alaska), as well, as both a military base, and a new support base for Arctic Energy exploration.

It was an Early Warning Radar and Interceptor base until it was abandoned in the late 70's.

According to the comments posted on the article’s links, everything is the Jews fault, and the USA will be destroyed by Russia and China. This is a very dangerous time.

Both Russia and China are becoming more powerful.

You’re right, we’re getting weaker.

This wouldn’t have happened if the Arctic had not provoked Russia into acting.

This is all about laying claim to what might be a very rich oil reserve.

Really? The Russians have grubbed together a flotilla made up of a destroyer laid down in 1982, two landing ships from the mid-70’s, an oiler from 1973 and a tug from the 1950’s and they’re a world power?

In your lifetime, Russia will not again succeed in becoming the threat to America and the free world that you desire to see it become.

You are more likely to see Russia fighting for survival from it’s own problems, and seeking help from the West.

Any Navy which sees the need to send a rescue tug with every warship deployment is not capable of global force projection.

Sorry, this isn’t your pre-Putin Russia anymore. Hopefully you don’t have to learn your lesson the hard way.

“In your lifetime, Russia will not again succeed in becoming the threat to America and the free world that you desire to see it become.”

They ALREADY ARE. Sorry if you unable to accept the FACT that a country that has GUTTED its military for decades has to pay a price for that.

But you are so OUT TO LUNCH on what’s going on in other countries and their modernization, I doubt you see a need for ANY military spending by us.

Certainly looks like a pre-Putin navy. Amazing how many people here run around, semi-hysterical at the sight of a tin-pot hard-man playing with his rusty toys.

"..going on in other countries and their modernisation.."

You choose a thread about a Russian deployment of 50 year old warships to make that point. Hilarious.

No they aren’t, if they are, then tell us about these massive, global, war capabilities that the limited 766,000 man Russian military has, and how much of it they can lose, or even use, before their nation is deeply threatened by secession and internal conflict, and China.

Seriously, describe this mysterious Russian war machine that you keep alluding to and that we can’t see, and that you feel dwarfs ours and NATO’s on the world stage.

Your wishes and fantasies, or just that.

Is there any level of military spending that will make you Obama apologists start to point out that we cannot spend so little and be a world power?

I doubt it, and I ran into you guys when I was in college, so I’m not expecting an answer.

I’ve given up on your OUTRIGHT DENIAL of the facts on the ground in Asia/Europe.

I can’t say I blame you though, it’s how some people get through the day.

Take care.

So you can’t produce anything to support your delusions, you just keep repeating your ridiculous personal fantasy, over and over.

Anyone who doesn’t join in soiling their underwear with you must be an Obama apologist? Logic fail but no surprise there.

I think we outspend the Russians by a factor of 5 or 6 to 1 and over the last 15 years the combined outspend is probably pushing 20 to 1. Which part of their military is causing you the hot sweats and why?
