Michigan Approves Corporate Welfare for Car Dealership
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 9/9/2014 | Jarrett Skorup

Michigan Strategic Fund board members voted Tuesday to divert almost three-quarters of a million dollars in local and school taxes to a private entity so that a Redford Township car dealership can upgrade its facilities, MLive reports. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. will give the dealership $719,528 to renovate its building and install a car wash on an adjacent piece of land it owns.

Michael LaFaive, director of the Morey Fiscal Policy Initiative, said this type of special treatment is unfair.

“It’s unfair because this dealer no doubt competes with other dealers not lucky enough to get a government handout,” he told MLive. “Robbing many taxpayer Peters to subsidize the corporate Paul only shifts precious resources around. Evidence shows it is unlikely to create net new jobs. Worse, this is money that could have accrued to local schools. Depriving them of such revenues represents a very high opportunity cost, unless of course some future graduates intend to wash cars on the new site.”

Never ends, does it?

At least until CW-II.

Can we take these funds out of the unearned monies of either the Obamafelons or the Clintonfelons?

Corporate Welfare is a misnomer. When someone complains about corporate welfare, they often don’t know what they’re talking about.

Welfare is throwing tax dollars down a black hole. Money is given out with little to no benefit to others.

Giving businesses tax breaks and other incentives can generate far more income and revenue through out the community.

“Giving businesses tax breaks and other incentives can generate far more income and revenue through out the community.”

A claim often made but seldom (if ever) proven.

And any proof should be backed up by real accountants (not liberal ones).

“Giving businesses tax breaks and other incentives can generate far more income and revenue through out the community.”

It can also unfavorably penalize those that do not get the tax breaks.

Michigan has consistently proven that these tax breaks and incentives don’t work.

Dems thar the 'party of the little guy'

When General Motors Corp. was closing dealerships across the country in 2009 as part of its bankruptcy restructuring, Paul Walser was afraid that his Bloomington-based Buick GMC would be on the chopping block. When it was spared, Walser credited Klobuchar's tenacity, saying she demanded answers from GM executives on why they wanted to shut down some of the most profitable dealerships in Minnesota.

This makes zero sense. Who in this government agency is related to that guy?

So you’re OK with different rules and taxes for the politically connected?

Who gets hurt the most? Their competitors, and ultimately consumers.

You either believe in a free market or one centrally planned. History shows us which works best and most efficiently.

Giving businesses tax breaks and other incentives can generate far more income and revenue through out the community.

You can treat them all the same. Lower the tax rate for all of them or none of them.

Taking tax money from one business and giving it to another is immoral.

Bullshit. The government shouldn’t be picking winners and losers or using taxpayer dollars to do it.

Exactly. They claim its good for business but it sure as hell isn't good for the competitor who doesn't get the break.

I agree with your sentiment, but go to any local governing body meeting - city council, school board, county commission - and just see how often it is done.

One man’s “tax loophole” is another man’s “tax incentive.”

That "one man" thing is the whole problem.

Every man would be better off if they never collected the taxes being used to prop up the one man.

Well, nothing says improved economy - for the area - like an upgraded car dealership!

Indeed. The word “fair” and “taxes” should never be used in the same paragraph, let alone the same sentence.

And by the way, quarterly payments are due next Monday...
