Ebola, A Nurse’s Perspective
Wordpress Blog ^ | OCTOBER 1, 2014 | DTOLAR

~snip~ First the virus gets into your system, I’ll elaborate on that later. Then, it hangs out for a few days, even up to 21, growing, multiplying at a rate of millions a day, and guess what, you’re infectious. Now at this point it would pretty much require a straight blood to blood interaction so the only real threat here is for IV drug users who share needles. Just like with the flu or hand foot and mouth disease, you can be spreading it to others before you show a symptom*(apparently not many see the *, so please read the elaboration at the bottom). Remember, nurse mind set, protect the community. At first it’s not bad, little nausea, some sweating, diarrhea, much like a stomach bug. But then the virus really starts to build up in your liver and adrenal glands, after it has saturated your blood cells, the lining of your vessel, your skin, and bones. Hepatocellular necrosis occurs, which is fancy term for your liver starts to decompose.Your liver is what regulates blood clotting. This causes your blood either clot up and turn to jelly in your veins, stay liquid and bleed profusely, or a combo of both. The adrenal glands then do the same, causing your blood pressure to drop. This requires lots of IV fluids to keep your circulating volume up. At the same time inflammatory cytokines are released which causes vascular leakage. Cells don’t do a good job of holding things together so it all becomes a bloody goop. Anywhere in your body that blood vessels are shallow, like your nose, ears, gums, throat, GI tract, urethra, vagina, rectum, all start oozing fluids and bleeding because the tissues that normally keep it contained are disintegrating. So now you bleed from every orifice....

It was reported last week that some family members have already been cleared of ebola, in fact one was a health care worker who was cleared to go back to working as a nurses aid.

“Impressive knowledge, even for a nurse”, SWIVE YOU PUNK! My Wife is a Nurse(RN) and knows MORE by ACCIDENT than YOU will EVER know on PURPOSE!

“Even for a nurse” implies that being a nurse one would expect her to have medical knowledge but that this nurse went even beyond that so I was complimenting her. You misinterpreted what I said and then went abusive. You will be ignored.

“Why don’t hospitals have the same requirements that we do?”

One reason is because of a history of HCW complaints about how bulky, hot, and uncomfortable the gear is while trying to care for sick people. (That includes doctors, nurses, respiratory, lab, x-ray, etc. Of course, that was pre-obola. Times have changed now.)

Picture yourself in all that thick, bulky outerwear, trying to start an IV or a central line (chest area IV), or obtain an arterial blood gas, and other fine-motor skills procedures. Before obola, the lighter the gear, the better patient care you could give.

This does not relieve a health care facility from the responsibility of being prepared and making sure their employees are prepared ACCORDING TO STANDARD CDC PRECAUTIONS. But everyone should realize that this Texas hospital is owned by a not-for-profit, faith-based company (and run by a CEO) that contributes mainly to Republicans. The nurses’ union and the media have been given their talking points. They are gearing up their attack to make a single-payer(govt) health care system seem to be the only answer to Ebama’s ultimate Cloward-Piven crisis —[gasp!] a full-blown EBOLA PANDEMIC!! [insert appropriate heart palpitations here]. Marxists are so predictable.

Coming soon... A fancy-azz new fed-gov “Biocontainment Center” near you. But hey... At least we’ll all be safe, right?

It’s a brilliant strategy, actually.

OK.
Let me tell you how the complaints were handled about people wearing full HAZMAT gear saying “It is too HOT AND UNCOMFORTABLE” where handled by OSHA.

I DON’T CARE!

As for the fine motor skills, take a look at what a mechanic has to do to repair a ruptured pressurized acid tank. Now, it isn’t alive, but there are a lot of sharp edges, fine work at times, and in an atmosphere where one breath without an SCBA will burn your lungs.

It really appear the medical field is twenty years behind what HAZMAT requirements are in the private sector. I have had to go in wearing a full “Green Giant” suit into temperatures over 100F. It sucked. Really sucked. Getting killed by CO2 or other nastiness would have sucked worse. Sending a cloud of poisonous gas over a local town would have meant what every engineer tries to avoid. My name in the papers.

We train in high heat with the suits on for long periods of time. Heck, we used to have to play volleyball with them on to get the feel of what happens (your suit blows up like a balloon).

Firestone stopped an outbreak because they had people trained in HAZMAT on site. In the tropics. We train for it all the time in the Midwest dealing all sorts of temperature extremes. Having a healthcare worker complain that it is to hot to wear in an climate controlled environment would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

“You will be ignored.”, As will YOU, let just leave it at that and go our separate ways.

I remember seeing the story about the nurse’s aid, but I wonder if the clearance was true. With all of the sensationalism that TV is given over to, why have we not seen her interviewed on TV. Why have we not seen an interview with the woman he was shacking up with?

So sad that I just question automatically any info this administration releases.

good question... I assumed they were trying to give the fam some privacy, particularly if one of them was a health care worker. Hopefully, the tests they administer are in fact accurate.

The government will take good care of us. Probably even chartered busses. It’ll be like The Hunger Games with contests, prizes, and fancy clothes.

No the implication was that your average nurse is stupid. Your post was bee ess and displays your ignorance. I’m a nurse with a master’s degree and I took offense to what you said. It’s as if you assume we are all pillow-fluffers and straw-benders who walk around repeating “yes doctor”. Give me a break.
