TX: Woman Planted Pistol in Child's Backpack, then Called School

Hodges

I suspect this sort of activity has been common in the war on drugs.   But this is the first case that I have heard where it has been documented that a gun was planted on a child so as to get them in trouble with school authorities.   It would of course, be even easier to do so with a few cartridges, and much less traceable.   From yourhoustonnews.com:
A 28-year-old woman was sentenced Thursday to three years in prison for planting a pistol in a child’s backpack and anonymously reporting him to the school.
Heather Hodges was the live in girlfriend of the boys father.   The boy is 13, and suspected that Hodges had planted the gun in his backpack.    Fortunately, one investigator believed him.   From Investigator Mike Price:
“He was so consistent with his story and he came across so sincere, not just emotionally, but how he just stayed with his story and would not waver from it, that my position was that there’s something to this. I was the lone wolf at that point.”
It is a good thing that Ms. Hodges was discovered and prosecuted.   Perhaps it will act as a deterrent to others.    Serious investigative work was involved.  The "anonymous" call was recorded and the voice compared to Hodges.   Her car was placed at the location the call was made from.    Eventually, she confessed.

This may be more common with the war on drugs.

What was her motive? Just to get the kid in trouble?

Sounds more like a sick bitch that wanted the kid out of the way so she didn’t have to share the fathers affection.

What does hiding a gun in a schoolkid's backpack and then reporting him to authorities have to do with drugs?

See the new Fargo TV show. Sounds like a copy cat crime.

To get him out of the house and into juvenile hall.

No need to involve the Laz in this investigation...

Stepmothers have historically had a bad reputation. (Obviously some of them don't deserve it.)

That must be doubled when the stepmother is just the "live in girlfriend" rather than the legal spouse of the child's father.

Drugs are planted on people, then the cops are called.

Or, if you are a cop and ‘just know’ that someone is guilty - just “sprinkle some crack on them” - instant unemployable felon.

No offense to the many good leos.. but there is a history of some (few) cops doing this. So the idea should not have been too far fetched to the officer - whom I applaud for his good work

Agreed, there’s little doubt Laz would hit it.

This case sounds like “evil stepmom-to-be” wanted the daddy distraction gone. When I clicked here, I expected their to be an ongoing custody battle.

While her methodology is considered unorthodox by trained professionals, if it gets one more gun off the street it is a righteous technique.[/sarcasm]

If the drugs don’t destroy your life the police will.

She didn’t count on the kid being surrounded by reasonable adults who already knew the boy, and decided to listen to him. This was not going to be a Pop-Tart Shaped Gun = Hysterical Teacher Moment. Makes you wonder what other things the father has decided he was ‘too busy’ to question about her decisions. The Dad better check his wallet, credit cards, and any new Life Insurance Policies too. No doubt her fingerprints are all over them both.

That would be the first rock I'd look under.

In a just world the kid would say, "Free gun! Awesome!" but that, unfortunately, isn't the world we live in. ;-)
