CNN) -- The grand jury decisions not to indict officers in the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson and the killing of Eric Garner on Staten Island have been made. Unsurprisingly, some people agree with them and others do not.
But dwelling on disagreement distracts us from dealing with the larger question at hand. What happens next? The answer seems rather simple. It is putting a plan into action that will be the difficult part. How can we move forward to allow the police departments of Ferguson, Missouri, and New York and those in many other cities to begin better meeting the needs of the communities they serve?
For starters, we must enhance recruitment methods, provide initial -- and continual -- training in specific areas of cultural sensitivity, encourage police organization transparency, and build police department-community relationships that will foster the development of trust and true collaboration.

There’s nothing wrong with understandings the community you SERVE. There is also value in critical thinking and training in de-escalating in tense situations.
My personal experience (as a white, law abiding, retired military in my 50s) is that this kind of knowledge is lacking. Many cops treat everyone like public enemy #1 and escalate too quickly.
And whose fault is it that the streets produce more thugs than police officers? Expecting blacks from the streets to effectively keep the law in those streets is like expecting pirates to pass laws against piracy. If blacks don’t WANT to be cops, and the black community doesn’t want anything BUT black cops-then they have NO cops. Anarchy. Wall-em off and let-em have it.
Should read “common sense”! Growing up around several police officers back in the 70’s and 80’s they were common sensed individuals, but i also observed the incoming mentality that is expected and prevalent in today’s squad room. They make up “charges” to hide their mistakes, are as friendly and respectful as any common thief, and can lie like the devil himself.
Robots and flying drones are an ideal force multiplier for law enforcement, and cheaper than hiring union members. Just arm them with nets, tranquilizers, maybe ankle boot devices. Robots don’t have a life to lose so cannot legally use lethal force to protect themselves. I agree with the protestors: the roided up meat sacks in blue need to stop shooting us, our children, and our canine best friends. This behavior is maximum bad government.
“Wall-em off and let-em have it.”
Works for me.
I say let all of the libs call the ACLU and NAACP when they need help. No police necessary. Problem solved.

Lawmaker wants Ferguson police force dissolved
The U.S. congressman for Ferguson, Missouri, said on Thursday he hopes the Justice Department disbands the city’s police department after the recent shooting of Michael Brown, and turns law enforcement duties over to St. Louis County Police.
Representative Lacy Clay, a Democrat, said he believes the Aug. 9 shooting of Brown by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson is only one example of the mostly white department’s “oppressive” treatment of blacks.
I don’t care for womanizing cops.
I want them to protect me.
Why not just get Petraeus to write up your rules of engagement so you have to call in for permission to protect yourself? Works well for the military (NOT).
By the way, our police, firemen and first responders all suffer like our military with PTS and depression. Now they will also have to deal with betrayal of their government.
Cops need more training in basic American values and true masculinity.
Modern police are “macho” instead of masculine, union city employees with too much influence over politics as they are part of the cop union/fireman union/teacher union/city worker union/gay/democrat/ political machine rather than a part of our communities.
