We have applied. How have any of your doctors, emergency rooms, or other providers reacted when you show them your card? Do they discount you right there? Any rejections? Are skeptical docs placated after bills are paid well and on time? I'd love to hear how it's working for you.
I'd love to hear any stories / experiences with faith-based health shares, Liberty or one of the others. Thanks, FReeper family!
I think we will go with Liberty Health Share if they will have us.

Forget it if you have pre-existing conditions.
Any experiences with faith based health shares?
My family is super healthy except for me; I have one pre-existing. They are reviewing it and I might have to pay $80 a month extra. But they didn’t say I was out.
This looks pretty interesting, and it sounds like they have been around since 1990 (albeit under a different name back then). I just lost my healthcare as a part-timer at Walmart, so this might be a good choice.
How is your health share experience?
$1 million a year coverage which we all hope we will not need. Obviously the sick and the doctor-addicted can’t apply. But we choose to avoid Big a Medicine unless it is really called for. We focus on prevention and natural healing.
I’d love to hear what doctors are saying when they see the card. Are they thrilled to avoid insurance BS? Do they accept the discount right away? Will they bill, or do you always pay cash up front?
Yes! One year. No worries. Haven’t had to use it, but the associated discount card for meds, eye exams, and dental has not been refused.
Awsome!
I have the Cadillac plan.....$200/month. I save $400/month over my old BCBS.
And they changed the plan some months ago to cover 100% for anything over $500/year in accumulated medical expenses. So good, it’s ‘sick’!!!
It is a good option, but I doubt it would count as a qualified plan to avoid any tax penalties.
If the family is pushed onto Medicaid or Medi-Cal it would not matter, but if the family’s income is above the federal poverty line, that would possibly incur a tax penalty.
I like self pay plans, but time will tell what or how the IRS will treat this situation.
As a wise man once said to me: “Bleh Fooey”
Thanks so much! The discount card for meds really works? That will be good. I’ve just sent a prescription to a Canadian pharmacy for the migriane drugs that are $51 a pill, meaning if I get a migraine it costs me $51! Under my ex-insurance they were $5 a pill and from Canada if you buy 30 they are $7 a pill.
Super happy to hear that. For 6 of us with their top of the line it’s a lot more but buckets less than what we used to pay!!!
Nachum, I believe it qualifies as an exemption from obamaCare. I sure hope so! Now I’m trying to find documentation of it. A FReeper once listed (couple of years ago) the four faith based plans that are exempt and this is one of them. This is the one that accepts other religions besides Christianity.
You get Exemption “D” on the pertinent tax form. Yes, we are exempt from the penalty.
Sorry.
I’m not familiar with Liberty Health Share or the faith based health share model.
I read Liberty’s home page.
I like the faith based community concept.
But, whenever a lot of money is at stake, it usually requires some very rigid rules, and quite often lawsuits, to keep everyone rowing in the same direction.
Well, I hope not. I couldn’t afford my Non Obamacare PPO any more. Obama said I could keep it but he didn’t tell me about the ...but you would have had to have won the lottery first... clause. $2500 a month. Even $600 cheaper, in 2014 if we had paid cash for everything we would have come out ahead. And I had brain surgery in 2014.
No secret that we were paying the subsidies for everyone else. I’m a late shrugged, but I’ve shrugged.
My hospital and doctors don’t take the ObamaCare policies with discounts, and I didn’t want Kaiser because they are not really responsible for anything going wrong. I don’t sue doctors but I love that they put extra effort because we could. They are responsible.
I like the idea of helping others and them helping me, and I haven’t heard anything bad about it yet.
I bet there are more FReepers out there who belong to a faith based health share. Come out, come out, wherever you are....
Thank goodness, yes, that is what they told me. We’re exempt, just like the eunuchs in Congress.
