Why do GOP candidates keep stumbling on evolution?
wahingtonexaminer ^ | Feb. 14, 2015 | Byron York

Scott Walker stumbled on it during a trip to London. He and the rest of the 2016 Republican presidential field will face it repeatedly in the months ahead. So it would probably be best if GOP candidates prepared a quick and clear answer to the question, 'Do you believe in evolution?' They'll have to use it a lot.

If they are like most Americans, Republican candidates believe God has guided the creation of the Earth and its inhabitants. That alone is enough to craft an answer that will both represent their beliefs and work in a campaign.

The Gallup polling organization has done surveys about evolution for years. They ask this question:

Which of the following statements comes closest to your views on the origin and development of human beings: 1) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God guided this process; 2) Human beings have developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life, but God had no part in this process; or 3) God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so.

In the most recent poll, done in May 2014, a plurality, 42 percent, said God created humans in their present form, while 31 percent said humans evolved with God's guidance. Just 19 percent said humans evolved with God playing no part in the process, and 8 percent had no opinion.

Anyone who feels that winning an election is more important than telling the truth, doesn’t deserve to win an election.

It won’t fly with the “middle 60%” ... as it will with the “committed 20%”. That’s the problem. There’s got to be a better answer than that.

And where I come up with those numbers is that a political campaign operative said to me, one time (when helping on a campaign for conservatives) ... there are 20% of the people (in the general public) who are absolutely committed on each side, and then there are 60% in the middle, who are willing to listen to you and you have the ability to change their minds, or to focus on your side of the issue.

He said don’t bother with the 20% committed on the other side, as they’ll never listen to you. AND ... don’t bother with the 20% on your side, as you’re wasting your time there ... they’re already on your side. CONCENTRATE on the 60%!!

If we don’t win elections and are not interested in winning ... I’m not sure why we’re talking about “elections” then ... LOL ...

Do you have something else you would like to talk about? ... :-) ...

They should say they believe in natural selection causing the evolution of traits within a species.

If the reporter even knows what that means, it would be a miracle. They are pretty much at the slogan level of “intelligence.”

BUT ... but ... did God create it using “Evolution” ... as some Christians say?!

SO, they say, “Yes, God created everything, and the mechanism he used was Evolution!”

I’m not saying this, because there are solid Biblical reasons for denying this ... HOWEVER ... there are Christians who are going to call you an idiot and stupid for not believing that God used Evolution to create everything ... :-) ...

“What evolutionary purpose does homosexuality serve? That is a very complicated question, embedded in nuance and
‘dog whistles’. Your question would an actual scientist stop and think before answering. If said to a non-scientist or someone using emotion based or Dr. Seuss type logic, they would say, “Why does everything have to have a purpose? It is simply because it is.”

Ah, trolling are we? I’d like to talk about our options once “winning elections” doesn’t work. Like the recent 2014 congressional election. “Our” side isn’t committed to truth, or to constitutional government, so how exactly does winning elections restore the republic?

they believe in natural selection causing the evolution of traits within a species.

Yes, you described micro-evolution, adaptation to the environment.

The macro-evolution theory, on the other hand, is an intellectually vacant arguement.

Or perhaps we could expound upon the relative advantages of living in slavery over dying free?

If winning elections don’t work ... I have no idea why people are here talking about a candidate “winning an election” ... LOL ...

I would say you’re totally out of touch with reality and exist in an alternate universe ... :-) ...

Evolution is a faith among the Pagans. Why should we be discussing matters of faith?

I would rather win elections with the kind of people who will preserve our US Constitution as we have today, instead of walking all over it.

The “problem” we have here is with “the people” who elect these candidates. Until we get the people on board with the right candidates, it’s going to be a big problem, just like we’re seeing now.

Evolution happens to be a “faith” among a sizeable number of Christians. And before you say “they are not truly Christians or saved” ... let me say that this would be absolutely untrue!

There ARE TRUE CHRISTIANS who believe that Evolution the truth of the matter. They’re wrong of course (at least I say so) ... but they are Christians!

You’re going to have to go about this a different way with these particular “true Christians” and show them the error of their way ... but telling the they are NOT Christians is not going to do it.

As far as the liberal element of society and those “pagans” who do not believe in God anyway (or some amorphous concept of God of the “eternal universe”) ... they are a different case and a different matter in how to talk to them.

I absolutely concur. I suppose my difference of opinion stems from the theory that we can win without pandering. It’s supposed to be a contest of ideas. If we believe that our ideas are better, for everyone, then I see no reason to avoid defending those ideas. Why not sell the conservative brand?

Evolution is not something one “believes in,” it is a theory that is either supported by evidence or not supported by evidence. Ditto “global warming.”

I’ll quote Jesus, from Matthew 10:16 ...

— — —

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

— — —

It’s not the exact meaning (as in the political sphere, as it pertains to the Gospel Message) ... but ... one can make an “application” of it to the political sphere ... :-) ...
