The Swamp Tour is fun!

We took a ghost tour, that was great, too.

Also the old plantations you can tour like Oak Alley, Houmas House, etc. gorgeous! What our South was like before the war of Northern Aggression. and the civil war was NOT about slavery, it was about states rights vs federal gov rights. and Slavery was ALWAYS wrong! I have black ancestors who were slaves...

There are several old plantation homes open for tours which was something I enjoyed very much.

Also, I recommend the airboat swamp tours.

WWII museum; French Quarter (daytime); St. Charles street car; Camellia Grill (a stop on St.Chas SC, ask the conductor, order the Yankee Sandwich); Mandinas on Canal Street; Casamentos on Magazine St,; Audubon Park Zoo; City Park; cemetery tour (don’t go alone); Commanders Palace on Washington Ave just off St. Charles; Chalmette Battlefield (200th anniversary of Battle of New Orleans); French Market / Café du Monde (don’t wear black); Central Grocery for mufellata; Jim’s in Old Metarie; Pasqual Manale’s on Napoleon Ave; Galatoire’s or Antoine’s in the quarter for first rate food. I grew up there. You’ll be surrounded by good food in every neighborhood. Dress down unless you have to dress up; don’t carry wallet in back pocket. Avoid Bourbon Street. I grew up there and go home often.

You don’t to N’awlins to go to the beaches, etc. Yes Biloxi is nice
but different as night and day to N’awlins.

You’ll notice a food theme here, and in most other postings. Be prepared for an eating experience.

Mr B’s Bistro
Pascal’s Manale - Italian/Creole
Angelo Brocato’s Italian Bakery
Drago’s for charbroiled oysters
Parasol’s for some local nightlife
45 Tchop Pub, for more local nightlife...very local...dive bar...family owned.

Besides the WWII museum eat!

Parkway Bakery & Tavern for what may be the best poboy on the planet.

Take the ferry over to Algiers. Interesting historic neighborhood. find the coffee shop over there (looks like they had good breakfast offerings too). Ruby Slipper is another good breakfast option.

Casementos on Magazine Street for some incredible fried oysters!

Restaurant R’evolution is great for fancier fare and steak.

Stay in the tourist areas at night and you will be fine. You wouldn’t wander into Any bad area at night...just use common sense.

Cafe Dumonde
Go into the Cathedral
Go into the antique stores
There is a fine arts photo shop that has some of the best photography you will ever see.
The zoo is cool
You can drink in the Malls
The aquarium
The iMac theater at the aquarium
Take a plantation tour
Take a swamp tour
Drive through the 9 ward, you can still see Katrina stuff
Walk around the garden district, go to the cemetery there...it’s lots better than the one in the quarter.
Irene’s Cuisine, right off the Quarter is great local (expensive) food.
Commander’s Palace is the High End place to eat.

Bourbon street is a nice half hour. Be careful..the drinks will kill you quickly.

Do not wear sandals.

Don’t be shocked by the smell in the bar areas. Being sober at closing time, you can see some great comedy. Watching idiots stumble back to their hotels is worth staying up late.

You really don’t need a car when you are there, and parking out of a hotel is a bitch.

The street cars up to the garden district are cheap and safe.

The key to a “safe” trip to NOLA is to be a tourist. Go where the crowds go. Go where the tours go. At night...if there is not loud music and flashing lights, you are in the wrong area. Go back to them.

If you are so inclined, take a look at the flood gates and pumps at the lake end of the outflow canals. If Bush would have installed those a year or two earlier, most of the Katrina flooding would not have occurred.

I love NOLA but my sister moved to Biloxi. I could not believe the miles and miles of outstanding beaches there. I drove home from California on my motorcycle and I drove from NO to my sisters. What a nice ride.

Unfortunately, those Parish Presidents had been bilking the system for years taking huge amounts of money from the Feds to build a proper levee system and never did. Instead they spent them money on their friends and themselves...partying it up...

The only way the Feds could have done it differently was to bring in their own teams and make sure the local boys were kept out. That would trample on State’s rights, so they didn’t. The people had to pay the ultimate price.

I am from New Orleans. All the food places recommended are excellent.

If you happen to be Uptown near Audubon Park go on Magazine St. There is a French styled restaurant called Bistro Daisy. It is family owned. The food is outstanding.

I don't think you will find a better French trained chef in the city.

Also, I think the best Po Boy shop is Bears Po Boys. (It has been rated for years by locals as the best in the New Orleans area) It is located on Metairie Rd under the Causeway Circle. It is in Metairie, a suburb of New Orleans. If you are coming from the city, hop on the River Road to Causeway. Your GPS should guide you. Bears is actually located inside Gennaro's. The Roast Beef Po Boy is fantastic.
