Don’t you think that if you are worth more to a company, you would already be paid more? You are paid exactly what you are worth, or else you would move to another company, or start your own. If you think the market place is set against you, then the problem is with you, not the market place.

“I feel if 2 people doing the same work. One happens to be male and the other female. Why not pay the same, “

This isn’t communism. You are paid what you deserve, not if you believe you are doing the “same work”. Even if you are doing “the same work”, the pay scale demonstrates that you are doing at a different scale.

Hi, bluejean.

A lot of people won't receive your post very kindly; I think maybe a little clarification is in order. That 78-percent number is a raw figure taken from the median compensation for women as compared to the median compensation for men.

It doesn't take into account some important factors such as:

1. Women are more likely to interrupt their careers for child-rearing than men are,

2. Men are over-represented in university fields of study that lead to the highest-paying jobs, and women are over-represented in university fields of study that lead to the lowest-paying jobs.

If you factor these issues into the calculation... compare males and females at the same point in their careers, doing the same jobs with the same educations... researchers find that parity has been achieved. The 78-percent number disappears.

So that's why the 78-percent figure is so poorly received here. It's based on real data, but it's not the whole story.

Oh yeah, this will never backfire on a woman asking for more.

When you take off a stretch of years, that’s not work at the company and you’re not going to get raises and promotions.

If a man did the same thing he wouldn’t get raises and promotions either.

Treat women special you’re mean. Treat them equal and you’re mean.

This whole country would be better off if we had one of the parents at home with the kids, prefereably the parent who’s best with the kids and can handle being with the kids the best.

Can you give an example of where this is actually happening other than Hillary’s staff or in the WH.?

As someone else pointed out, those pay rate comparisons are for women as a group compared to men as a group, and thus do not take into account the kinds of jobs many women take, or the interruptions to their careers when they stay at home to raise their children.

Many women put children above career, and that is the cause of the disparity.

If apples are compared to apples--that is, a woman and man doing the same job with the same level of experience and education are compared--then there is no pay disparity.

Because of my education and experience, I actually earn more than some men who have the same pay grade.

I believe the disparity comes from the fact that women tend not to negotiate a better price up front.

Women are, on average, paid 78 percent of what their male counterparts are.

What? I cannot believe that that old lie is still out there.

Well, the push has been quite successful. I am willing to bet that even the majority of FReepers think that the concept of a full-time housewife is an anachronism.

I think all women should contact Chelsea to ask her how to get more the way she got more just for being Chelsea. I guess she thinks it should just be handed out like it is to her. Work, qualifications shouldn’t matter or should they?

How much $$$ did Chelsea rake in as a recent Stanford grad at McKinsey?

Low six-figures, iirc.
