A writer for Scientific American? I can now fully disqualify that rag as a joke; a flat Earth society with no qualifications in science, and yet calling themselves “scientific”.

First off, any expedition initially successful in the world's current political environment will have to come in the form a military styled operation under command. Exporting our political and class struggles into space under the guise of diversity where each individual is totally invested with where they came from is not going to work. Either you pull your weight or you don't go (further is the case).
