Vanity: Hybrid computer bleg
self | April 18, 201 | Sherman

Posted on 04/18/2015 4:04:34 AM PDT by Sherman Logan

My notebook computer is dying and needs replacement. I like the idea of replacing it with a tablet/laptop hybrid, as I can think of a number of ways to make my life more productive if I could use both.

I go out to jobsites and gather information on paper, then bring it back and enter it into the computer and produce reports. Seems to me the info could be entered into a tablet and skip a step.

I also do a fair bit of work with graphics and such, but for that I normally hook up to a large monitor and use the two screens together, which I assume I could still do with a hybrid.

I'd really appreciate suggestions from anybody who's tried any of the hybrid systems out there.

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: hybrid
Non-obscene suggestions cheerfully appreciated.

I bought a small Dell inspiron mini 1012 “netbook” a few years ago.

It came with some version of windows. I used it for a while, worked well. I did not use wifi, but I used a usb cell modem, for internet everywhere your cell phone works.

Small screen, about 10 inch. The best resolution is 1024 x something, so screen real estate is a little limited.

I wanted something that was a laptop, not some limited thing like a tablet, so I could use software normally - the thing is just a PC.

Very light, easy to carry. Has a real keyboard that is just big enough so I can type normally.

Battery lasts a long time.

It includes a real ethernet port so you can plug it in normally.

3 usb ports.

It’s great.

Then, windoze got hammered by some hacking whilst I had it on the same router as another machine. win was so mixed up, I gave up and just installed CentOS. (just needed to plug a usb dvd in and boot from it, no problem).

Since then it’s been great.

If you have really demanding software you’ll find it a little slower processor. But for normal use it is fine. spreadsheets, web, etc.

just my 2 cents !

Take a look at e-bay or Amazon and look for a used or off lease Lenovo x201T. price around $200 or less.

When I graduated from the University of Wisconsin in June of 1970, my EE degree was in digital design and hybrid computing.

Hybrid computers were an integration of the digital computer and the analog computer. In those days, digital computers didn’t have the horse-power to do what the analog computers could accomplish.

Boy, have times changed!

I recommend the Wiktionary definition, not that of the Urban Dictionary.

I am not an Apple Cult member, and I don’t understand their rabid devotion to Apple.

However, two of our younger relatives are at a level of management in two separate companies where their jobs often take them out of their offices. Their companies need them to be in touch by phone and by tablet or portable PCs.

They didn’t want to be carrying a lot weight and gear with them while outside their offices.

Their IT guys in the two separate companies came up with the
Same solution:

1: Apple I phone 5 at that time.
2. Apple tablet with a lot of memory
3. Both use Verizon.

Both systems have worked out for them over the past year.

Their companies have paid all buy in costs and monthly online costs.

One will be looking at the new portable Macs to handle heavy duty computer stuff and still be light to carry.

The other may trade his IPad in for the new larger IPHONE 6, and his IPhone 5 for the smaller 6 to carry on and off duty.

The artists at work swear by these things. Run all the office stuff plus photoshop.
