Chlorine gas was the ORIGINAL chemical warfare weapon, and the first of the poison gases deployed in the First World War.

Particularly effective in trench warfare. Plus, it’s much cheaper to produce than most other chemical warfare agents.

His appalling ignorance of history, geography and common facts makes this guy truly a bumpkin. He is an “urban hick,” exactly like his wife.

The use chemical weapons was the brainchild of German chemist Fritz Haber. Haber won a Nobel Prize for his work on fixing nitrogen from the air. This process probably also prolonged WW-I as previously nitrates for explosives were imported from places like Chile and these imports ended with the blockade by the British Navy. Haber knew of the toxic qualities of chlorine and suggested it as a weapon against Allied trenches. Chlorine being heavier than air would concentrate in the trenches.

technically, chlorine is an element

Just to quibbles a bit, chlorine gas is a diatomic molecule, hence a chemical in that form.

Do your job media people and put down the tent poles and pick up your pens.

It's well past firing time.

No, of course he is not right. (But you knew that.)

The statement that chlorine isn’t ‘historically’ considered a chemical weapon show s a total lack of historical knowledge.

Chlorine was the first gas used in industrial scale on a battle field.

The Geneva Protocol of 1925 was the first practical international effort to ban the use of chemical weapons. In the declaration, chemical weapons are defined as “asphyxiating, poisonous, or other gases.” Because of the “other gases” catch-all clause, voluntarily dispersing a cloud of chlorine using an explosive device does fall within the realm of chemical warfare.

The Geneva protocol is still part of the legal acts concerning Chemical Weapons, though new Chemical Weapons conventions have been formed. In those conventions chlorine is not specifically mentioned as a chemical weapon.

Thus, if Obama had refrained from his historical deliberations, he may have had a point; a weak one but still a point.

Yeah, It’s just so hard to not make fun of him that I sometimes just get goofy about it. If I accidentally came across him in a building lobby I think I would just point at him and start laughing hysterically.

I understand you. I don't know who are the most ridiculous - Obama or the liberals who worship him. Laughable, all of them.

Before the 2008 election I compared him to Hitler. But after he was in office for about six months, I altered that. And it has remained that way right until now. I now compare him to Mussolini and compare his followers to the followers of Hitler.

BTW, here is a photo of hitler's followers when they were feeling the brunt of his policies:

I expect it to be worse this time, with more radiation. Hence my tag line. We are in the calm before the storm. Those that would see us destroyed are making plans. They know their time is short.

“Tell those that went through the Gas Chambers in basic training”

It was without a doubt, one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life. After the first CS I inhaled, I thought I was going to die and they kept us in there for what seemed an hour. Your lungs feel like they are burning and the snot and other crap that came up was not pleasant. Thankfully, it only lasted a few minutes. Chlorine gas lasts a few minutes and then you die.

Where did he learn his history facts, because even in High School history, I would call him very wrong, my High School texts described two dangerous weapons used heavily by Germany in World War I as mustard gas (which is bad because it leaves a poisonous residue on surfaces) and chlorine. This was back in High School people, and FTR, that was more than one decade ago for me, tell me how well some history or chemistry teacher’s statements remind you of the horrors of gas warfare in World War I perhaps 20, 30 or more years after you heard it. I don’t know, it probably will never be out of my memory.
