Out in the real world, pay increases are usually tied to performance. Do a better job, grab a better position, and make more money. It makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately, Congress is not part of the real world. When you live off the largesse of the American taxpayer, the sky is the limit. No matter how terrible a job you do, you can always demand more.
Enter Florida Democrat Representative Alcee L Hastings. He’s terribly concerned that the paltry $174,000.00 we currently pay our average congressmen is so low that “Morale” may suffer. Hastings complains that high rent has forced him to move to a “comfortable but not nearly AS comfortable” apartment, and he worries that members of Congress make will be unable to send their kids to college.

Absolutely fascinating reading - that he was actually elected to office says bushel baskets about his constituency. Seriously, Marion Berry has almost nothing on this guy.
Sometime in the mid-20th century, a congressman called another congressman an idiot. The reply was that it may be true, but a lot of his constituents were idiots, and they deserved representation. I suppose that convicted felons, who in most cases can’t vote, still live here, many pay taxes, and deserve some kind of representation...
I don’t believe that being a congressman was originally envisioned to be a full time job, much less a career...

The nutcase shouldn’t be in Congress, but in the mental hospital. I think he, Hank Johnson and Shelia Jackson Lee is trying to dumb down Congress. ( I think their IQ combined is 1.)
Had a friend who was manager over about 10 discount stores back in the 70s. He said a store manager walked into his office one day and announced “If I don’t get a pay raise I’m going to quit.”
My friend told him “Give me your store keys.”
The guy said “What? Wait! Can’t we talk about this?”
My friend said “You told me if I didn’t give you a raise you would quit. I’m not giving you a raise so you just quit. Now give me your keys.”
Mr. Hastings can always go find a job elsewhere if he’s not happy with his current pay. Plus, how can costs be going up? Obama’s economy is booming.
But... but... but... they all supplement their earnings with theft, graft, and corruption.
How about we allow them the raise, but with the provision that they can no longer score additional loot by influence peddling, which is the real reason many of them have become filthy, filthy, crooked rich, e.g., Pelosi, Feinstein, Reid, et al.
