Paul: Colleagues hoping for an attack to blame on him

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) late Sunday suggested that supporters of a National Security Agency (NSA) phone records surveillance program are hoping for a terrorist attack after the program expires so they can blame it on the Kentucky Republican.

"People here in town think I'm making a huge mistake. Some of them I think, secretly want there to be an attack on the United States, so they can blame it on me," Paul, who is running for president, said from the Senate floor.

Paul added that a reporter recently asked him if he would "'feel guilty'" if there was an attack.

"The people who attack us are responsible for attacks on us," he said. "So the ones who say when an attack occurs it's going to be all your fault, are any of them willing to accept the blame? We have bulk collection now, are any of them willing to accept the blame for the Boston bombing?

He told reporters after his speech that he's not opposed to "looking at the records of terrorists."

"In fact, I want to have more people looking at more records of terrorists, just less people looking at innocent Americans’ records," he said.

Paul's comments come after senators voted to move forward on the House-backed USA Freedom Act, which would end the NSA's "metadata" collection and instead require private companies to hold the records.

But Paul is opposed to the reform bill, as well as previous attempts by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to extend current Patriot Act provisions used to justify the NSA’s bulk, warrantless collection of Americans’ phone records.

He's made his opposition to the Patriot Act a key pillar of his presidential campaign, sending out tweets and emails to supporters to try to drum up support.

But he's also denied that his procedural tactics over the past weeks were related to his campaign, telling reporters Sunday night that "the point I wanted to make is that we can still catch terrorist using the Constitution."

"The Senate advanced legislation 77-17 to reform the National Security Agency on Sunday, but parts of the Patriot Act will nonetheless lapse for a few days amid opposition from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

The legislation, called the USA Freedom Act, will not reach President Obama’s desk until after the three measures expire at midnight, meaning that the provisions will expire until the bill is passed by the Senate and signed by Obama later this week.

“The Patriot Act will expire tonight,” Paul declared triumphantly from the Senate floor during a rare Sunday evening vote. “It will only be temporary. They will ultimately get their way.”.... Patriot Act expires as Paul blocks final vote on NSA reform

"And a pro-Paul super PAC released an ad Friday that framed Sunday's showdown as a "brawl for liberty," even using the spot as an opportunity to hit not just Obama, but Paul's primary opponent, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. [Calls Cruz "The Canadian" with a Canadian flag backdrop]

"Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is selling an “NSA spy cam blocker” emblazoned with his his name through his presidential campaign website.

The item that sells for $15 is one of the many novelty items that people can buy to show their support for the newly announced candidate for the 2016 GOP nomination.

The small plastic tool sticks to the top of a laptop, and opens and closes over the camera on the top of the screen.

“That little front facing camera on your laptop or tablet can be a window for the world to see you - whether you know it or not! Stop hackers and the NSA with this simple camera blocker. Safe and practical,” the description reads."....... Rand Paul sells ‘NSA spy cam blocker’

Rand Paul is a narcissistic who just wants attention so he can promote his hopeless campaign.

Well, an “attack” might cause people to rally for even stronger - um - “protection”.

OK, tinfoil OFF. But time to ping NJC!

And no, I don’t believe 9/11 was an inside job.

Be interesting to see what develops these next few months.

That's really not much better. I'm sure the NSA will have plenty of rubber stamps and likely set up a small office with each of these private companies. Also, why should the companies be required to maintain all this data? That's a huge expense they'll now have to undertake for zero gain.

Yep, and F&F wasn’t about the govt trying to take away our 2nd Amendment Rights or running guns in Syria ala Benghazi.

No tin-foil needed, NOT a ‘conspiracy’...that’s the ONLY way to objectively look upon those ‘failed’ plans (and by ‘failed’, I mean it got out in the OPEN).

How else would one look upon a fully open Southern border (not just OPEN, but BUSSING those F* IN?!?) or the revolving door of illegal aliens (just how many MILLIONS constitute an insurrection??).

Sometimes, just SOMETIMES, they ARE coming for you...

The ONLY silver lining, until the details are known...One can SUE a private company when those records are released w/out a court order/etc.

Govt makes it REAL difficult for the serfs to rise back up out of the ‘lovely filth’.
