I remember Windows 3.0. Free to everyone. Microsoft mailed copies to very business in the USA. It has been nothing but paid upgrades ever since.

One problem with MS is that they come out with stuff and then discontinue it later.

How long before the “apps” go the way of gadgets (Win 7)?

Yep. They probably think their DVD players are conspiring against them.

Windows 10 is going to be a cloud based os, they can push NSA spy ware to your computer at will.

Linux is going to be your only option to preserve your privacy soon.

I have heard many cases where Windows 10 makes it hard to install a dual boot system on the same hard drive, I am still planning on this though using a bootable usb stick. They are going to be a life saver for privacy.

I tried Ubuntu Linux live on the pc I bought over a year ago. Seems to handle most of the hardware.

May dual boot it and revert to windoze for the few things that I need.

Anyone know of a good VPN client for linux? I use Avast and it works fairly well.

Still on Win7 - might start boning up on LINUX..

It sounds like a better option everyday. But, then there's the old learning curve. It just doesn't hurt that bad yet, but it's getting there.

No, and that was my point. I’m going to have to work my way through each of them to determine for myself what I want and what I can live without.

I swear is FR the place for all of the tech illiterate people on the right choose to go?

There is not shame in not being technically expert. Not everyone is a techie. I have often posted technical questions here because I know that there are many tech geeks here, and I have often found really excellent advice from my more technically adept fellow Freepers.

In fact, knowing I can almost always find useful technical advice here is one of the perqs of being a Freeper.

What was the point of your condescending and unhelpful comment, anyway? I swear there seem to be more crankie, smug, self-righteous jerks on FR every year. Take it personally.

I loved the slide rule. I used it in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. It cost me $29.00 if I remember correctly. I gave it to my son who still has it. I barely know how to use computers, the electronic revolution largely passed me by.

But can you...really?

If that's your attitude then you shouldn't use ANY computer operating system of any kind unless you wrote the programming code yourself. And even then ~~~ who really knows about the hardware? ~~~

You poor paranoid soul

You poor naive simple-minded twit! You've been here since 12/2000 and are still totally clueless. Maybe this will help a little. Just scan this page and let me know how you "feel" - FreeRepublic search keyword “NSA"

And this is just one of the 3 letter agencies helping keep us safe.

Right you are. The Win10 crowd is as arrogant as the worst of the Linux snobs.

I may be a bit older than you - I remember when DESKTOP calculators were first out; one of the more ultmately useless math classes was learning how to calculate functions on a slide rule. My first computer (still in the closet) ran CP/M and you didn’t learn how to make it work by searching on the internet.

Regarding the 1st para, here's one of my favorite sources for info on Windows 10. Imagine that!

Re the 2nd para: Dittos. No kidding!

I expect a smart techie can/will write an app consolidating all this issues so us not so smart users could have one place to go to check off the features we don't want and change them all at once.

Thank you in advance.

Have you checked out your phone? ipads? Lots of spy stuff there too. If you have android phone and use that #1 downloaded flashlight app, better check what it does too.

When you begin to install Win 10, there is a box you can check for “custom install”. That will let you read many of the privacy things and you can say yes or no.

You can also go back later if you miss it and stop them too. (win10) >Start>Settings>Privacy; go thru the entire list on the left side.
