Donald Trump Is an Affront to Anyone Devoted to William F. Buckley’s Legacy

Donald Trump, Counterfeit Republican By GEORGE WILL August 12, 2015

In every town large enough to have two traffic lights there is a bar at the back of which sits the local Donald Trump, nursing his fifth beer and innumerable delusions. Because the actual Donald Trump is wealthy, he can turn himself into an unprecedentedly and incorrigibly vulgar presidential candidate. It is his right to use his riches as he pleases. His squalid performance and its coarsening of civic life are costs of freedom that an open society must be prepared to pay.

When, however, Trump decided that his next acquisition would be not another casino but the Republican presidential nomination, he tactically and quickly underwent many conversions of convenience (concerning abortion, health care, funding Democrats, etc.). His makeover demonstrates that he is a counterfeit Republican and no conservative.

He is an affront to anyone devoted to the project William F. Buckley began six decades ago with the founding in 1955 of National Review — making conservatism intellectually respectable and politically palatable. Buckley’s legacy is being betrayed by invertebrate conservatives now saying that although Trump “goes too far,” he has “tapped into something,” and therefore

I’m a Cruz supporter, but the reason I argue in favor of Trump at times is because hey let the man run on his own merits.

It’s up to us to decide who we want as a nominee. It’s not up to the GOPE or FIX News.

If he is the one who understands what voters want and what animates them in 2016, then he will do well and very well might be the guy.

If he doesn’t, then he won’t do well and likely won’t be the guy.

I do not like all of this fixed deck crap.

This is our government, and its purpose is to serve us, otherwise there is no point in it existing at all, and from what I can tell, a lot of people have had just about enough of this crap.

"Just like everyone else who is slamming Donald on these boards. If Donald gets the shaft, then they all do."

I know I'm glad you signed up last month to tell us that we need to be pro-Trump or we'll "get the shaft."

I hate it when George Will is right and so many Freepers are wrong.

You can thank the GOP leadership for Trump. They created him by stabbing conservatives in the back and support Obama's agenda.

In every town large enough to have two professional sports teams and a business jet port, there is a bar at the back of which sits the local GOPe insider candidate, nursing his single malt Scotch and innumerable delusions. Because he promises to do the bidding of anyone who will give him money, he can turn himself into an unprecedentedly and incorrigibly slick presidential candidate.

He will pretend to do listen to the frustrated citizenry, and then do the opposite when he gets elected. He is a whore

How many “conservative” republicans believe in queer “marriage”?
George Will does.

I agree completely. If Donald goes down in flames it should be fair and square. Not because an inside the beltway cabal gave him the thumbs down over tea and crumpets.

I have seen the RNC in the wild at their Winter Meeting in 2012.

I observed them for three days, as I was in the same hotel.

Think used car salesman on steroids with greedy pulled back wives.

Surrounded by these degenerate scumbags who use the political process to steal money from the working class to line their pockets, I knew all bets are off.

The communist DNC is apparently worse.

Abortion was something Reagan didn’t give much thought to when he became governor. It was not an issue like it is today. He let his handlers talk him into signing some of the biggest pro-abortion laws ever passed in California. Then he started studying up on abortion and read all he could get his hands on and turned into one of the great pro-life politicians who ever lived. As abortions skyrocked in California he said signing the law was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made.

What are “pulled back” wives?
Not familiar with that terminology and a quick search only brought up discussion of foreskins, LOL.

I get the feeling that the PP sting operation is a distraction intended to redirect the public’s attention away from something even more disturbing.

The sceptic in me feels like we are being played

Donald Trump, Counterfeit Republican

Sheeeeyit. As if John Boner, Miotch McConnell, Juan McCainez, Susan "Vodka" Collins, Olympia Snowe, Oar In Hatch, Chris Krispy Kreme, et al, ad nauseum, are the real deal?

I don't know how long I'll be a Trumpeteer but, dammit, I'm going to enjoy every second of every aneurism and dyspepsia he causes among the elitists.

If it wasn't for Trump, what would you be writing about George? Ted Cruz? Scott Walker? Marco Rubio?

No. You'd be writing about some inane and boring-ass subject like baseball.

The only reason anybody is even interested some 16 months before the election is because of Donald Trump.

I didn't bother reading Will's article. Does he say who his candidate is? Does he shed light on any policies his candidate supports or is it just another empty-headed Trump-bashing article?

“In every town large enough to have two traffic lights there is a bar at the back of which sits the local Donald Trump, nursing his fifth beer and innumerable delusions.”

In a nutshell, Bowtie George just explained to us precisely WHY the GOPe feels so free to ignore us after every election. He simply has no respect at all for us because we may not live in NYC or DC or Boston, and we may actually have regular jobs. And yes, we even read books and form opinions.

George Will apparently forgot that Bill Buckley ran as a 3rd party candidate for mayor of NYC in 1965 since he considered Lindsey to be a RINO. I think Bill Buckley would find Trump to be a fascinating candidate. Perhaps not his first choice, but he liked it when people shook things up and ran against the political grain.

“in his defense... he does believe in....defunding....part....of planned parenthood!

When he’ll be asked how thats going to work is anybodies guess”

Actually he has a pretty coherent plan. He’ll fund PP if they get out of the abortion business. Of course PP will scream, but PP has always been saying that abortion is a ‘very small’ part of what they do. So getting out of that business so as to keep the government money gravy train flowing ‘should’ be a no-brainer to them.

...of course we’ll quickly find out what the truth is.
