What are your favorite military themed TV series?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 08/21/2015 7:50:23 AM PDT by ken5050

TGIF, so I thought I'd take a little break from ATTAC (all things Trump and Clinton) and turn to a lighter topic. In almost 70 years of network television, the two most popular genres by far have been westerns and police. Doctor/medical dramas have always entertained audiences. But I wanted to see which military themed TV series Freepers like, and/or remember most.

‘Tour of Duty’ (87-90) was pretty decent. Every time I hear ‘Paint it Black’ I think of the start of that show ..

“Combat with Vic Morrow. Hands down best!”
Make that two. Followed by 12 O”clock High.

My dad’s favorite was Victory at Sea. The soundtrack is beautiful. As for me, I’d have to say it is The World at War. It was a 26 episode British production and was a gripping, concise history of World War II. I don’t remember which network aired it but I think it was probably PBS during the seventies. It was life-altering for me. No child should be allowed to graduate without seeing this series.

Right now, “The Last Ship”. Love Adam Baldwin as the XO. “Find me something to shoot!”

The World at War for me. Watched it as a kid and to this day the theme song is still haunting.

JAG and NCIS....no others come close. When you are the best series like these two, the others are subpar.

JAG turned me off in the first episode where he landed an F-14 on a carrier from the back seat.

Fred Gwynne who went on to stardom in two classic comedies, "The Munsters" and "Car 54, Where Are You?"

"Yutes?"

I do not know about my favorite and I will probably get ripped for this, but I liked certain things about Major Dad. Yeah, there were a couple of flaky elements, but I think they had some respect for the Marines they were portraying even though it was a comedy. Anyone know where to get the collection?

Three. When you get into documentaries, there's "The World at War", followed by "Victory at Sea". If you expand it to miniseries, then "Band of Brothers" is, in my opinion, the best thing ever put on film....

I remember when Rickles broke Carsons’ ashtray when hosting the Tonight Show. Carson went over to Don’s studio...

Classic moment.

World at War...my how history repeats...someone said the music was haunting....ditto. Best History show ever produced in my mind.

And yes...Hogan and the boys.
