We are now here in the great state of Texas. We have left behind that state that had me shaking my head incessantly. Of course, if we want to remember what it was like in good ol' Cali, we can take a ride into Austin. Maybe not.
Might want to skip the Al Lipscum State Fair Classic weekend as well. Grambling plays Prairie View A&M that weekend and its not so fun for those who are melanin challenged.
LOL...as in loved it...to death ;-)
On a high hill on the NE corner of Sand Springs, overlooking Tulsa. Five years and lots of good memories. The tribe owned the mineral rights under our house.
So is your screen name geographical, or a reference to bois d’arc?
There certainly were “sparks” flying outside the place that night.
I was in Fredricksburg, talking to the bartender. She said she moved there from Austin ten years ago. She is still considered an outsider.
If you are not third generation you are a newbie in the Hill Country.
That's Right, You're Not From Texas by Lyle Lovett
To you, yes. To Texans, no.
The bow wood...is a great wood. Hard as rock.
Great wood working wood....
Good to talk with you....
Moved to Idaho about a year ago from California, and went to my first rodeo last month. The announcer asked during a break I the action how many people were from California. There was a smattering of applause. He responded “Welcometo the United States of America.
If you're on a tight budget like me, these aren't too bad.
Ten for $10 at the local RiteAid when they're on sale!
The Eyes of Texas
A cowpoke in West Texas was herding longhorn cattle one day when he heard faint music coming from nearby. After hunting about for a time, he discovered the sound was loudest near one particular calf, and was even louder near the calf’s tail. Putting his head close to the calf’s hind end, he heard,
“The eyes of Texas are upon you, all the live long day ...”
Amazed, he tossed the longhorn calf over his horse’s back, mounted and rode quickly to his line shack 10 miles away. There he put the calf into his truck and drove 74 miles to Ft. Stockton, where he took the animal to a vet.
When the vet asked him what was going on, the cowpoke told him, and the vet went around behind the calf and gave a listen.
He agreed he too heard, “The eyes of Texas are upon you, you cannot get away...” but didn’t seem particularly excited.
“Man, how can you stand there and not be amazed?” the cowpoke asked.
The vet, a third generation Aggie, said, “Bud, I’m an Aggie, and I’ve been listening to a-holes sing the “Eyes of Texas” for years.”
Not to be mean or anything, but you’ll never really be a Texan. Not to the locals.

But I am glad you got out of the PRC.
Myself, I would rather be a pauper in Texas or Virginia than a prince in the PRC.
Welcome to Texas, from a native daughter. You arrived just in time. The State Fair of Texas opens tomorrow. If it’s deliciously deep-fried, it can be found at the fair.
You just missed the summer heat. Remember: air conditioning is a necessity, so keep a trusted a/c repairman on speed dial.
Congrats and welcome y’all!
Please remember why you left California though. We want to keep Texas awesome! You can help!
That's probably true with most places, be they big cities or small towns. It's even the case in many neighborhoods.
Their problem is they have taken the Austin mantra (Keep Austin Weird) to heart. Ugh.
I don’t know if I entirely agree with this.
Sure there are people here who are deeply proud of their state and their heritage. Quite a large number in fact.
But Texans are very diverse, and the state is growing (fast). So it’s not like it once was.
People tend to become more Texan as they stay here. I’ve noticed myself going through that myself.
It’s a huge state. Lots of welcome here.
Sure the native-born have that something, but so do the native born anyplace.
Texas is a very special place.
It is hot though. Very hot. :D
