Who can replace Speaker of the House John Boehner, who announced Friday hes quitting? Almost anyone. Maybe even you.
This isnt a comment on the job Representative Boehner has or has not done in his role as leader of his legislative chamber. Its meant to illustrate a little-known fact: Under the Constitution, the speaker does not have to be a member of the House. He or she doesnt have to be an elected lawmaker or government official. The speaker can be an ordinary, private citizen.

NEWT GINGRICH
The ONLY person to balance the budget in the last 80 years
It’s been 60 years since we had a balanced budget. I did get a kick out of the debate where Newt slammed Clinton about claiming we had a balanced budget around 2000 (we didn’t), then a few minutes later took credit for it.
I’d love to see Newt as Speaker for other reasons, but the whole balanced budget thing is used oats.
If a non-member of the House is elected Speaker, does he get a salary? I.e., did Boehner get a salary as SPEAKER, or as a REPRESENTATIVE.
Speaker....
But you can’t double-dip.
The campaign donations that a Speaker receives are astronomical.
Just think. A Speaker who was not a Member of Congress would have no need for campaign donations.
Beginning to think the Speaker should be required to be a non-Member.
Newt balanced the budget by 1999 or 2000, I forget which
it was during slick willie’s term
No, he didn’t (unless you consider using estimated tax revenue increases which never panned out, and ignoring certain budget items including interest payments). You don’t go further into debt with a balanced budget, and we have every year since the mid 50’s.
