Why Twitter’s Dying (And What You Can Learn From It)

It’s early fall, and I’m at my favorite cafe in London. What the? Twitter’s a cemetery. Populated by ghosts. I call them the “ists”. Journalists retweeting journalists…activists retweeting activists…economists retweeting economists…once in a while a great war breaks out between this group of “ists” and that…but the thing is: no one’s listening…because everyone else seems to have left in a hurry.

. Abuse is killing the social web, and hence it isn’t peripheral to internet business models — it’s central. It has significant chilling effects: given a tipping point, people will simply stop using a network, and walk away…and that appears to be what’s happening with Twitter. Abuse is just as central to tech that connects people as selling beef that isn’t contaminated with salmonella is to an industry that feeds people. For the simple fact is that no one wants to spend their life being shouted at by people they’ll never meet who are angry not at them but at the world for things they barely even said to people they barely even know.

I do not use Twitter, have never used it, and never will use it.

That being the case, I will appreciate it if someone here at FR will ‘ping’ me when it is once and for all, finally, not only merely dead, but really most sincerely dead.

I am always looking for a reason to celebrate events with a glass of bourbon and a cigar, and the demise of Twitter will suit the bill nicely...

FB isn’t cool anymore. But there’s a much bigger market for not cool than cool. Which is why FB is a long way from dying.

What’s their business model? Where does the money come in? How can you make a profit on a service that nobody pays to use? I don’t even see advertising.

Twitter isn’t stupid. The people using it... but the thing itself is just a thing. It’s a communication platform for short communication to a wide audience. It can be very useful if you can master the billboard.

I think Twitter is being set up to be bought out by someone else. The most likely candidates: South Korea’s Naver Corporation or Japan’s GREE, Incorporated. We may see a bid from Apple or Google, but antitrust concerns may make such a bid difficult.

Eliminate anonymity and the abuse will dissolve away. Not that there is an effective way to eliminate anonymity. But if these vicious little psychopaths and the paid propagandists were required to be identified by name and address they would disappear into the clouds of sulferous gasses from whence they came.

Twitter (along with Myspace) will die without the joy of having my participation.

The only concession to social media I have made is Facebook - and I did that under duress from the High School Reunion Committee.

I look forward fondly to the day that FB “loses face” and fades into oblivion.

I think I will vent my grief by live tweeting my own bowel movements so that others can experience my joy.

Any tech/programmers here wanna write me an app where I can tweet while I toot? And podcast it simultainously?

I mean lets be real here. Twitter and FB are mostly filled with complete crap to begin with so why not fill it with real crap?

I shall be the Poop Lord!

some idiot liberals think Free Republic is an antique as if their websites are so great. I can’t believe that anyone would bash this technologically advanced website. Pisses me off when they do.

Steve Balmer bought $800 million worth of Twitter. He nearly destroyed Microsoft. I have no doubt if he is throwing his support at Twitter that Twitter is lost.

I am going to jump in to the game with my own social media app. I will call it Dipshitter. It will function a lot like Twitter, but will include periodic "pop-ups" which encourage, entice and even goad users in to posting ever-more embarrassing and stupid things about themselves and their loved ones.

I expect the end result will be...

...

...exactly the same as Twitter.

Amazing you can get through life without participating in this airheaded crap or ever owning a smartphone.

How did the world evolve before this and "dancing with the idiots"?
