[Vanity] Windows 7 updates being blocked by Windows 10 update in panel HELP!
December 5, 2015 | self

Posted on 12/05/2015 2:50:16 AM PST by huldah1776

Good morning! I thought it odd that I hadn't received notice of updates on windows 7 so I went to the update panel and the only update was for windows 10.

Then I noticed the little blue link "show all available updates" and went to the page where you select your updates. I selected all 34 that are there. Clicked okay, and when I got back to the update page up in the panel where you click start download is the same one and only aggravating windows 10 update I DO NOT WANT.

I'm already having a bad morning and I don't need the aggravation.

It's probably because I clicked on the "reserve a copy of windows 10" last year or whenever but dread going to 10. Just too stinking stressed for that major change and I've worked with it at a friends house (setting up her printer) and IT STINKS.

Go here and download the GWX Control Panel.

http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

You can use it to get rid of all the Windows 10 crap.

Yes, I second that suggestion. Read the instructions here ...

Using GWX Control Panel (formerly GWX Stopper) ...

Also, if you know how to make a .REG file and import it into REGEDIT, then use this script for some extra assurance ( do this and the above from the built-in ADMINISTRATOR account to be sure that it sticks ) ...

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OsUpgrade]
"ReservationsAllowed"=dword:00000000

Several sites give information on removing the Win10 notificiation.

Check these Google links:

Also, this one [with pix] on how to uninstall the KB3033583 update culprit:

Wish I could get 7 back.

You can if it's been less than 30 days... It will revert if you tell it to - Or you could always ship your data off and restore to factory...

huldah1776 - thank you for your question because the posts resolving the issue(s) helped me a lot!!!

Democratic-Republican - thank YOU for the GWX Control Panel link. We got two laptops November a year ago that came with Win 8.1. I use Classic Shell to make them look like Win 7 and haven’t had any problem with 8.1. I got the notification about Win 10 and, not knowing any better, made the reservation for it on my laptop. I then did a bunch of research & decided “no way” & went back and officially cancelled the reservation. I haven’t had any more ‘notifications’ etc. The other laptop is now getting the notifications fairly frequently (eligible to upgrade, it’s free, etc.). A very non-technical person is using that laptop & this is confusing her badly. SO .... I was googling how to get rid of the notification when this thread popped up.

Bottom line, I installed GWX Control Panel on both laptops. The one getting the notification wasn’t much to deal with - two clicks & Win 10 notifications are gone. MY laptop on the other hand, had a 6 GB Win 10 file (when I made the reservation, it downloaded a file ... and left it there). Those have been deleted & all other applicable selections made on GWX Control Panel to keep Win 10 from installing against my wishes. I also have GWX in “monitor” mode since some folks have reported Win 10 files being surreptitiously loaded again with no input from the computer owner.

THANKS AGAIN to both of you!!

"Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...

" ... THANKS AGAIN to both of you!!

Glad it's working for you ... for now anyway.

There are MANY variables in this situation. IMHO, the most likely reason this 'upgrade' returns for so many people is that the steps they took to prevent it never actually stuck. And for the remainder, the changes were later reverted.

Summary: there are two steps in making changes ...

Quick background: We used to have a saying: When is an Administrator not an Administrator?. The answer is in Windows. In Vista to be exact. ( actually around Longhorn Part Deux when they shifted to retard code that became the NT Windows 6 branch and colorfully christened as Vista. Vista was 6.0. Win7 was 6.1. Eight is 6.2 ... ) This entire branch though is gobs of hand-holding sheeple code.

For consumers, the last time that an Administrator was really an Administrator was in XP and 2003. What this means for people on Vista and above is ...

What is pertinent is that realtime antivirus and security software ( including Windows Defender, Microsoft Security Essentials and all those 3rd party titles ( Norton/Symantec, McAfee, Kaspersky, Avast, MBAM, ... etc ) usually lock certain registry keys and files under the idea of system protection, and even the Built-In Administrator can be thwarted since these helpful security suites load kernel drivers and services. Fun Stuff.

If you know what you are doing, then you should go into these A/V security suites and add the GWX Control Panel executable file to the exclusions list so that Microsoft does not blacklist the thing later ( yep, they've done it before ).

For the highest probability of success ... If and only if you *really* know what you are doing, then you should be able to discover how to perform a true clean boot, which means all security drivers and services are DISABLED. Security Essentials, Defender, and almost all security suites have an available, albeit semi-hidden button to disable 'realtime' monitoring, often from the systray icon. THEN, from the built-in ADMINISTRATOR with everything disabled you can apply almost any desired change and successfully have it stick. Just remember to return the computer to it's prior state. However be aware, Microsoft can push out changes to reset any file or registry key. Thus reverting all that work.

Additionally, Microsoft has been known to change MSKB numbers to push an update repeatedly. That registry patch will thwart this only until they stop honoring that registry entry, but it was still working last time I checked.

So be aware that this thing is a moving target ( one that often deposits 5.7 GB of files without your consent! That pretty much is a world record for malware intrusion, not to mention bandwidth wasting ). Just accept the fact that Microsoft has fully turned the corner on ethics and is intent on masking your life a living hell for not using Windows 10.

There is a built-in true “Administrator” account ( it needs to be enabled to use it )

*********************************8

I’ve gotten this far! :-)

I am not a “tech”, but have access to a very skilled tech who helped me when my last laptop crashed. Being stubborn (and having done some successful trouble shooting in the past) I worked on that laptop for 3 days before I cried ‘uncle’. I gave him the list of all that I had done - he was astounded that I had tried so much & figured out a lot. Bottom line, the laptop was 5 years old & not worth saving from a hardware standpoint (needed $300 worth) so we started over. When things like this Win 10 & GWX Control Panel pop up, I do my best. The next computer I get, I’ll probably use a different OS than Microsoft with all that is going on now .... I’m just fed up. Thanks again.

THANK YOU! I got it and it’s so cool. It did take quite a while for me to get the updates done (hence the late response) and I finally turned off all auto updates. I tend to know when it’s been too long between updates which is why I looked at it a couple of days ago.

Thank you! did get it uninstalled and my hard drive and slow internet are quiet. When and if I do have to go off grid, the internet will be the hardest withdrawal.

After I installed the GWS tiny software and turned everything off, the windows 10 update did not show up in my list but was in the big box at the top of the update page, it took a while to get my updates done. I found that choosing the updates by the date (usually choosing 2 weeks worth when reformatting a hard drive) makes it easier.

Another thing I had to do, be sure to click the “start” icon and look at the shutdown button. The yellow warning for shutdown to update will tell you when you need to restart to apply the update. I also noticed it didn’t apply the update when I chose the “REstart” as opposed to “shut down” option. So now I shut it down totally and it can apply the updates. Took me hours but it’s a new day!
