I definitely agree that candidates should be vetted, and vetted based on consistent criteria.
So, if one criterion that is established in law is that both parents must be American citizens for a person to run for president, so be it.
If another criterion is that one is natural born if born in another country to American citizen parents, then that too should be followed.
I think there’s a lot of back and forth on this issue because there has not been any recent court ruling on what “natural born” means relating to the presidency. I don’t know if there’s ever been a ruling anytime in history on that subject.
Agreed that this issue should be resolved in some reasonable way. Realistically I think such resolution will have to come from the federal courts.
I think the fact that we have lost our sense of what "American" means, is the root of the problem. Have we forgotten? If we know what an American is (is this still found in some form in our naturalization tests for prospective citizens?) we will certainly know what a natural-born American citizen is. Do any schools today ask their students as part of civics/American history to take the citizenship test, just to get an idea of the process?
