A friend gives us a copy of the NYT times now and again because we use it for garbage wrap and dog place mats. That's where I saw it although given how seldom I bother with newspapers, radio news, or TV news, it may have been around a while.

So, who is the poor, no doubt now imprisoned, person who broke the story ?

Jail-breaking is a horse of an entirely different hue. That is breaking open the “consumer self-protection” apple system that makes their products idiot-proof. It allows low-level OS functionality that most apple customers neither need nor would use.

Breaking the security of an apple product requires hardware level access... and that is something any technology company is unlikely to want anyone to do. REALLY messes with their proprietary secrets.

That could very well be true.

Last week there was a classic FR discussion on this issue. It was very free ranging and both sides and other sides were put forth and discussed.

This thread is a hard hat and steel toe boot one, and not for timid souls.

Please spend some time going through this thread to get all sides.

This may be a hotter issue than the presidential
election for this year and years to follow.

I think this is a show.Apple gave it over and the good guys are waiting for the bad guys to make a move.
San Bernardino Massacre: FBI Raids Home of Shooter’s Brother
According to records, Farook enlisted in the Navy from 2003 to 2007, earning several medals during his service. The raid came one day after Apple’s CEO Tim Cook released a statement to iPhone customers, announcing their intent to fight a judicial order directing the tech giant to aid the FBI in hacking the terrorist’s phone.

what's the big deal?

Sneak & Peek is one of the big deals. There are requirements for delayed notice, but with all of the exceptions and extensions my guess is the majority of subjects will never know their data was accessed by law enforcement.

Too bad the shills/trolls herein can’t figure out a way to backdate their date of membership listed on their never created homepages.

Microsoft founder Gates backs FBI in encryption fight with Apple

The clash between Apple and FBI heats up

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has broken with other Silicon Valley giants by backing the FBI in its battle with Apple over hacking into a locked iPhone as part of the investigation into last December’s San Bernardino terror attack.

In an interview with the Financial Times published Tuesday, Gates said a court order requiring Apple to help the FBI access a work phone belonging to gunman Syed Farook was “ a specific case where the government is asking for access to information. They are not asking for some general thing, they are asking for a particular case.”

Gates went on to compare the FBI request to accessing bank and telephone records. However, he added that the government must be subject to rules about when it can access such information.

I hope that we have that debate so that the safeguards are built and so people do not opt, and this will be country by country. [to say] it is better that the government does not have access to any information. Gates said.

The San Bernardino County-issued iPhone 5C was used by Farook, who with his wife, Tashfeen Malik, killed 14 people at an office holiday party in December before they died in a gun battle with police. The government said they had been at least partly inspired by ISIS.
