Two weeks ago I fell down my basement steps. We had put a new security door on the front of the house. I was carrying the old screen door down to the basement. I remember losing my balance and starting to fall. The next thing I remember was the EMTs trying to slide a backboard under me so they could carry me to the ambulance.
X-rays and CAT scan found only one bone broken, a vertebra. I'm wearing a back brace for that. However, my right side was covered with bruises in glorious technicolor. Very painful for several days. The doctor assures me that the vertebra will heal, but I will need to wear this brace for a couple of months.
I'm posting this for two reasons.
(1)If any of you are moved to pray for my recovery, I'd appreciate it.
(2)I'm 84 years old. By all rights I should have arrived at the bottom of the steps with most of my bones broken. I attribute my lesser level of injuries to an exercise regimen I've been using for the past 20 years or so.
MWF, I do 20 pushups. TThSat I do a set of exercises with a pair of 5-kilogram weights. I chose a set of exercises that works out every major muscle group.
I was not doing the exercises in an attempt to become Charles Atlas. I was doing the exercises to keep my bones from getting brittle. Even though I didn't become Charles Atlas, evidently I succeeded in keeping my bones from getting brittle.
I post this to alert my fellow Freepers to the importance of regular exercise in maintaining bone strength. Guys and girls, it's not too late to start. You never know when you'll be glad you kept your bones in good shape.
Thanks for posting this. Sorry you fell. Glad you weren’t injured worse. Praying for your swift and complete recovery.
Prayers up for your speedy recovery!
May the Lord bless you with a speedy recovery.
Congrats on pulling through as well as you did.
And, yes, prayers UP.
Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery.
Hearty congrats for "staying strong" and only breaking one bone! Hopes for a full recovery.
God bless you and yours!
Here's a little song you might want to listen to (if you get a chance) which I hope will bring a smile to your face.
"Dry Bones" sung by The Cathedrals Quartet.Take care Joe.
Prayers up, and thanks for the pep talk about bone strength. I needed to be reminded.
Sending prayers for a swift recovery.
Good advice you’ve imparted, thank you.
BTTT
Prayers offered for a speedy recovery!
Joe... I am so sorry that you had such a nasty fall. Prayers for your recovery and I truly pray you aren’t in a great deal of pain. Thank you for your advice of keeping fit, Like my Mom used to say, “Use it or lose it” (she was a RN and did say that people with a few years on them did better mentally and physically when they stayed active. She swore the “body” was lazy and needed to be pushed to keep strong). That being said, may I ask a (personal) question that you may ignore if it is out of line? Before you fell, were you dizzy or weak OR did you truly slip/turn an ankle/lose your footing and then fall? Hugs, Mom
Prayers up.
And thanks for the advice.
Thanks for the recommendation, and prayers up.
Please be very careful next time or ask for help.God Bless You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Prayers Sent, God Bless.
