here in Michigan our roads are horrible and they blame it on the trucking industry first then the weather. I say bullshit to both!
When you see the county road patching crews on the major highways just dumping the patchcrap and moving on without packing it down and letting the traffic pack it in to the holes, you know there is a major problem. There used to be a time when the crews used a heavy stamper to pack that crap into the cracks and holes to insure it stayed put. Not anymore..........
So what was the solution to our state's roads? Our REPUBLICAN legislature and REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR approved an increase in fuel taxes with a guarantee that would take care of our state roads........
Yea right! Just like the mega dollar lawsuit against the tobacco industry was supposed to go to our state's health care system (NOT!) and the state lottery was supposed to "subsidize and fund" our state's education system. Neither one happened, all those monies went into the state's general fund..........
And amazingly, since I have gotten off the road, boredom hasn't set in as I still have the quarterly & annual filings to do. Then I got back into studying history & law and on top of that we are reintroducing livestock back onto the homestead so we can be self supporting.
Don't know about the Bannister scale, haven't been out there in years but yes, Cali scales are notorious and that is why we went prepass years ago and so we rarely got called into any of their scales. For us, most generally we went into the scales on purpose once a year so we could get a Cali inspection sticker rather than waiting for them to initiate it. Taking the initiative worked great for us.
Well, enjoy your retirement and if you get too bored, backyard livestock or getting back into studying further our history and US laws is a great time passer as well as a mind exerciser.
Right now I just plant a small garden and have about an acre of yard to care for.
Taking care of my wife right now.
She has pulmonary fibrosis and has taken a turn for the worse.
Taking her to the UVA Pulmonary Center tomorrow for some better care.
I don’t place much faith in the local specialists because the hospital has grown to control healthcare in this area.
You can’t even get a second opinion without going to another city. That’s when insurance networks limit your options.
I say my prayers and put it in god’s hands and do what I can.
Hopefully once the pollen settles down it will help.
I would love to have a calf and some chickens.
Free eggs and home raised fryers!
I was raised on a farm and do miss it.
Best way of losing money I have come across!
We were under the impression that medical certificates were keyed to your driver’s license through the Secretary of State and that licenses would not be renewed without a valid certificate, he said.
WHOOPS! ... as a CDL holder, I can verify that this guy & his wife did NOT do their homework and thus suffered the consequences of the age ole rule, “ignorance of the law is no excuse”.
I thought that this varied by state. Every state seems to have their own rules.
nope, someone forgot to read their 49 CFR manual as medical certificates are federal requirements not state requirements, therefore, the states are simply the reporting firm for the federal government.
They talk about taxing for different projects and they especially like the “sin” tax on liqueur and cigarettes. I bet if the double taxed the porn industry they could get a considerable amount more taxes. But, of course they would most probably be taxing themselves!
I did a retreat with a guy who retired as a long-haul trucker and now he drives newly-built Volvo trucks from Dublin to their destination(Usually Roanoke). It sounds like a sweet gig.
Perfect job for a retired truck driver!
You get your diesel rush but get to be home too!
Win win!

I was was not talking about whether or not a medical was required, or not. I know it is a federal requirement.
I was talking about whether or not a state tied it to the driver’s license/CDL, so that you have to have a valid medical before you can renew your CDL.
Just like in some states you have to show proof of insurance before you can renew your DL, and in other states you don’t.
The connection to the state license was a mandate from the feds, to consolidate the records in a central system easily accessed by all states & DOT inspection stations nationwide.
