Rush Limbaugh Has Completely Lost His Way

Probably no one has earned more leeway from conservative voters and pundits than Rush Limbaugh. Rush has been a tireless force for the conservative movement for decades, and he probably is responsible for a whole lot of conservative Republicans who are currently in office. But thankfulness for past service only goes so far, and Rush’s program yesterday officially crossed the line.

When I think about Rush’s last year or so on air, I’m reminded of Marshall Phillipe Petain, one of the most intriguing figures of the twentieth century. Without Petain, the French might not have prevailed over the Germans at Verdun, and thus might have lost World War I. But for as much thanks as France owed Petain for his service in World War I, the full historical reckoning for Petain must acknowledge that Petain was a Nazi collaborator, the leader of Vichy France, and a totalitarian dictator. Petain’s history is complicated, and to tell the whole tale honestly requires acknowledging both the good and the bad.

So it is with Rush. For all he has done, and for all we should be thankful for, it is hard to deny that Donald Trump has brought conservatism to a critical moment. From this moment forward, it will either resemble the vision Rush has preached for thirty years, or it will not. It will either move forward as a recognizable force, or it will be destroyed with Trump in a historic landslide election.

Conservativism “will either move forward as a recognizable force, or it will be destroyed with Trump in a historic landslide election.”

I’m afraid the second option is pretty well guaranteed at this point. The Trump supporters are showing a volcanic anger toward any more traditional conservative. Formerly well respected commentators are now labeled, anti American sell outs. I frankly don’t understand the allure of Trump.

I agree. If anything, freerepublic has lost it’s way.

sadly you are right...populism is not far from conservatism. Trump is a charismatic populist. They overlook his support for government healthcare, planned parenthood, affirmative action, unions, partial birth abortions, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Shumer, al sharpton and all the other left wing positions hes held recently.

these same people are not mad at trump for not doing his job in Colorado. They get mad at who trump wants them to get mad at.

I think both Trump and Cruz are stiffs. I buy some of the arguments against both. I will vote for either with equal nausea. I can’t believe the enthusiasm for one or the other. I have been critical of Rush in the past. He’s not flawless. From the snippets I have heard lately I actually think his handling of the Cruz/Trump situation is right on. He’s never going to criticize a potential nominee overtly. It’s hilarious to hear Trump cats and Cruz folks getting pissed because they think he is supporting one over the other.

he is a Cruz guy but doesn’t hate trump

That alone show's that he has indeed made a choice. Admittedly he is subtle about it, but he made a choice. But, didn't you hear? He says that he is neutral.

From Ted Cruz interview:

If I am elected president, we will repeal every word of Obamacare. Now, once that is done, everyone agrees we need health care reform. It should follow the principles of expanding competition, empowering patients, and keeping government from getting between us and our doctors. Three specific reforms that reflect those principles: No. 1, we should allow people to purchase health insurance across state lines. That’ll create a true 50-state national marketplace while will drive down the cost of low-cost catastropic health insurance. No. 2, we should expand health savings accounts so people can save in a tax-advantaged way for more routine health care needs. And No. 3, we should work to delink health insurance from employment, so if you lose your job, your health insurance goes with you, and it is personal, portable, and affordable.

You are now aware of what Donald Trump’s health care plan is. Please don’t misrepresent it again.

He said healthcare for everyone, government will pay for it. We had Medicare and Medicaid before Obamacare, so he didn't mean that.

You rebutted NONE of my statement trying to reconcile Trump's infamous statements with the web site that has at very least, a markedly different tone.

Repealing Obamacare and all of the executive orders that weren't even in Obamacare is enough of a start. Smart mathematicians start with one variable at a time. Remove Obamacare. Every word. Every EO. NO MANDATE. It will take a while to sweep away the rubble before coming up with a government answer to the problem.

In the future, I will try to represent Trump's current position as a plan to cover everybody with government paying for it including some well-regarded free enterprise enhancements. It's a mouth full, but I think it is as accurate as we can get based on what Trump himself has said. His info on the Canadian healthcare system, which Trump has said some very supportive things about is WAY off base. I have Canadian relatives that I married into, and the horror stories they have personally experienced are pretty serious. Not as bad as our own VA, which I am sure Trump or Cruz could address much better, but very serious.

Btw I have no idea who Leon is but he’s an idiot...trump is not the future of conservatism....if he is ...I quit....trump is trump...trump is for trump>>> i agree and just like all men work for their own self interest, he has a lot of property and golf resorts that rely on a prosperous America. I think MOHO that he does love america and is putting himself out there for mass criticism. let’s see levin and rush give up their market shares and jump into the fray. They can. Rush can. he is a billionaire too. just sayin. Rush and Levin after all really don’t do anything but provide advertising platforms for real products. (excepting Rush’s books for kids that is truly future concrete) Trump has tangible real products mostly in the USA and some worldwide. /end rant

Trump is not a conservative.

No, but he IS an American who believes in the fundamental goodness and rightness of the United States. And that alone puts him miles ahead of any of the other sh*tbags in Washington or in this election. And that includes the "true conservatives", whomever you may think they are...

That’s nice, but it’s a rehash of the Romney boilerplate Republican non-plan plan.

Trump’s plan includes two very important aspects to reforming our broken (it was broken before Obamacare and now Obamacare has completely shattered it) health care system. Price transparency and drug re-importation are essential for true reform.

Karl Denninger has been doing the numbers on what those two items can mean. It’s shocking what that would do just to slash government health care spending (which is a significant part of our budget) not to mention the private sector savings.

He never said health care for everyone. You’re lying again. And AGAIN he has a health care plan that I have clearly pointed out to you. Are you going to keep lying?

That’s really my problem with Rush too. I don’t really care if he supports Cruz or Trump, but I want him to be honest and not play games. He has thrown away my trust in recent months and I doubt he’ll ever get it back. That’s not to say I’ll never listen, but I’ll always listen with less trust. I don’t think that bodes well long term.

I’ve only heard the touch back amnesty here. do you know what this is about?
