Quick Followup: Autism and Vaccines

Folks, let's be clear: Autism is almost-certainly not caused by vaccines.

Let's remember the first rule of observational studies, which incidentally I was surprised to find a few years ago in my daughter's High School intro-to-stats class: Observational studies can only show correlation and correlation cannot prove causation.

However, the absence of correlation is damn near bomb-proof evidence that the alleged cause you believe exists is false.

Measles vaccination in the US began in 1963 following approval in 1962. Within five years near-complete compliance was obtained within the US. MMR, the combined vaccine that people like to blame autism on, replaced the single measles vaccination in 1971. MMR is typically given at approximately age 1, with a second dose before starting school.

Autism is typically diagnosed within the first two or three years of life since it impacts early language development, with nearly all cases diagnosed before entry into primary school at age six. In other words the cause couldn't be the second dose, as it occurs after diagnosis.

The rise in autism did not exhibit a "step function", it has been more-or-less linear and began roughly in 1980, continuing to today, with a doubling of incidence between 2000 and 2010.

It is utterly impossible to link what is a rising rate of a disorder with a nearly-level rate of vaccination since 1971 for these diseases. The curve does not fit and therefore there is no correlation. This is nearly-bombproof evidence that vaccines do not cause autism.

However, there is a curve that does fit.

That would be insulin resistance in the mother.

Oh, and by the way, we know that diabetic mothers have a roughly 400% greater risk of producing an autistic child than non-diabetic mothers. That's statistical fact.

When did obesity start to take off in the United States, which I remind you is an excellent indicator of insulin resistance and thus chronic elevated insulin levels irrespective of clinical diabetes?

1980.

Causation? Unproven.

However, the curve fit is an almost-exact match.

I remind you that not every case of autism has to match with the correlation for a strong causative link to be present, just as not every lung cancer is caused by smoking.

So why don't we look at this given the obvious match in rate-of-incidence curves?

There are plenty of reasons but I'll let you start with attempting to enumerate them in the comment section.

Diabetes and autism! WOW, who would have thunk. Sugar is a poison. It is amazing how much sugar is in the average American's diet.

Autism is the new diagnosis for failure to indoctrinate.

Observational studies can only show correlation and correlation cannot prove causation.

This is barking up the wrong tree. Causation is most closely linked to the nearest available deep pockets. I thought everyone knew this.

I have to wonder what would happen if 60 years ago you said that antibiotics were dangerous because of the Bacterial resistance....

They would probably call you an anti-antibiotic kook.

I think the vaccines DO have issues, but it is a cost / risk analysis that needs to be done. certainly for major illnesses like polio, Measels, Mumps, Scarlet Fever, etc, Vaccines are a life saver and something that has dropped childhood mortality rates to near zero levels compared to the past.

However, we may learn that some vaccines should not be given to really young babies, or that “bundling” vaccines causes unintended consequences, also that getting constant vaccines for generally non-lethal diseases like the flu, may cause problems later on like auto-immune disorders.

The science of vaccines, like gore-Bull Warming is FAR from settled.

Mush like how antibiotics are not a “cure-all” and abuse of them can lead to all sorts of problems.

I was very interested in the film DeNiro took to Sundance which supported the theory. It was withdrawn before being shown due to pressure from the sponsors. ?? He has an autistic son.

I know two families with autistic kids.

In one family, it is inherited (other relatives have the same condition).

In the other, the mother was allergic to thermosyl (sp?); she told the doctor this, but was told it was no problem. Her son had a slew of vaccinations all at one time (he was a little behind), and from that time on, he changed and was diagnosed as autistic.

So, a) “autism” probably covers a lot of conditions which are similar, but not necessarily the same; and

b) use common sense with vaccinations, as with all medicines

Obesity is not caused by sugar as such. Your analysis is way too simplistic.

The article is well written and thoughtful.

“Sugar is a poison.”

Ugh, it certainly is not. Sugar is an essential nutrient required to support life. You can eat it directly, or you can try to avoid it and your body will just manufacture it out of other stuff you eat, because your body cannot function without sugar.

Now, too much sugar is not good for you, but that does not make sugar a “poison”, any more than water is a poison (yes, drinking too much water is bad for you too).

Not just as simple as this.

The vaccine schedule has ballooned since 1971, far more doses of vaccines and far more thimerosal into younger and younger kids, more frequently.

Further since 1971, there are far less sources for vaccines. Lots had chicken or other animal platforms for development, now many only have fetal tissue incubations, whic lead to a lot more cases for autoimmune problems due to other human proteins in the vaccines and the body attacks those, and then sometimes starts attacking its own proteins. Does not happen with animal proteins.

Not if your hypothesis was actually feasible and couldn’t be contradicted by observation and experiment. You see, that is how science works. Reasonable people will believe a feasible, confirmable hypothesis (like antibiotic resistance), while only loons will believe an unfeasible, debunked hypothesis (like vaccines cause autism).

Got news for you! Eating refined sugar, which is what I did not make clear and should have done so, is unnecessary and most definitely NOT essential to nutrition.

Another Theory with again correlation, is the increase in fertility drugs and autism. What is also interesting that autism occurs at higher rates with affluent couple, which tend to take more fertility drug to compensate for lower fertility rates in older couples.

This theory has more than correlation in that there a hypothesis behind the number. (Took this from a BLOG by Terrance Mix who wrote a book on it- VERIFY ALL SOURCES on your own) "One of the side effects of Clomid is that it impairs the production of cholesterol by acting on enzymes in your body, similar to the way cholesterol-reducing drugs do. Children born with these enzymes that are defective - and thus cannot produce sufficient levels of cholesterol - are born with a wide array of birth defects . . .Women of child-bearing age are warned to use birth control methods while on statin drugs for the same reason. (also warned not to take statin while Breast Feeding)

Theory goes that Brain development is impaired because essential fats are not available in early fetal development after taking Clomid. Clomid has a long half-life.

Meh, sugar is sugar, it doesn’t matter to your body what form it is in, unless you have a condition (like lactose intolerance) that make its difficult to digest a certain type of sugar.

I've successfully managed my weight and immune system for about five years now. I use a very normal amount of sugar, but only granulated cane sugar. In appropriate amounts, it's an essential part of a diet that works for me.

One possible factor came to mind as I read this, considering the time frame of the increase in autism. It is highly processed foods, especially high fructose corn syrup.

There was a sort of cost/benefit analysis done, in that the World Health Organization, U.S. Government and others decided that vaccines are necessary for world health. Non-vaccinated people are at risk and put others at risk. The U.S. Congress some years back passed legislation making the vaccine producers off limits for lawsuits claiming their responsibility for bad vaccine outcomes. One English doctor asserting some linkage between autism and vaccines was publicly shamed, I believe to send a worldwide message. Government research grants don’t exist for vaccine/autism research.

My grandson was born with spina bifida (his lower spine was exposed at birth. He has severe nerve damage, and his immune system is severely compromised. His parents talked about vaccines with his SB specialist.

She was emphatic that being unvaccinated and contracting any of those diseases would likely prove fatal. She did admit that there are alternative and less potentially harmful ways of giving the shots. When he was taken to the pediatrician for his vaccination, the nurse popped out from behind the door and vaccinated him before a conversation could take place. It is their practice to give an ambush shot so the child doesn’t have a chance to tense up.

Soon after, he lost his bubbly personality and developing language, and developed rocking, flapping, and blank stare behaviors. Diagnosis of autism followed, a devastating blow in view of his many SB symptoms, complications, and difficulties. Thanks to an intense intervention program he began to speak again at age 5. At 7, he is not conversational, but can verbally make his needs known, and can express thanks and love to those he trusts thoroughly. He is considered high functioning, for which we are deeply
grateful.

Over the years, I have learned that some doctors who trust me will discuss the vaccine/autism link in private. They agree worldwide vaccination is necessary for the good of all, but believe there should be intensive research to address the delivery of vaccines to high-risk patients. There is almost none of this research, due to the government’s heavy-handed tactics that have dried up research funds and made researchers fear for their reputations and careers.

I am all for doing double blind research on vaccines and combinations of vaccines etc... but saying that vaccines don’t cause autism, case closed, is close minded “The science is settled” thinking. It could be another mechanism that causes autism and that vaccines are an accelerator in cases where an individual has a genetic predisposition for autism. It may not be the vaccine, it may be something else in the vaccination shot or maybe just the stress of provoking an immune response in a child who has certain immune conditions that we don’t know about.

In 20-30 years we may finally recognize the actual connection if there is one, but now what is to hurt by delaying the vaccinations a bit until the child is a few months older, and not bundling them, but doing them one at a time with a nice stretch of time in between each one?

The bundling of vaccines concerns me, it may be a necessity in the 3rd world where a child may not be able to see the doctor but once in their childhood, and the risk of the vaccine is minimal compared to the risk of dying from the diseases being vaccinated for. But in the 1st world spacing out the vaccines is infinitely easier as you can do them one at a time with a 6month gap between during bi-yearly routine checkups.

Why expose yourself to more risk if it can easily be helped?

And yet sadly there are people on this very board will say you are full of crap and that all vaccines are 100% safe. The problem I see is the cronyism between the CDC and the major vaccine developers is in full CYA mode and they cherry pick which information to release concerning the side effects of vaccines. Again another problem that we will probably find out in the end that is caused by Big Government corruption.

Not only that, but every pharmacy i go into these days seems to be pushing the flu shot like they are preventing a great plague. I don’t like the idea of them bundling up the vaccines into a shot to vaccinate against 3 or more viruses.

There is a LOT and I mean a LOT of cronyism between the Pharmaceutical industry and government agencies like the FDA and the CDC. I am pretty sure a hell of a lot money is being spread around inside of the CDC and FDA to protect their favorite cronies from liability....

No doubt there is money being spread around OUTSIDE that circle too...

All vertebrate neonates are believed to prune half of their brain neurons after birth. Autistic kids likely have a defective pruning system caused by increased insulin resistance and therefore have almost 67% more brain neurons than normal humans.
