Still, there are more than handguns floating around in the possession of the civilian population in the US. A lot more. I suspect that since 2008 the private ammo stash has increased dramatically. 30 years ago one would keep a couple of boxes around and pick up what was needed that day on the way to the range. I don’t think that is so much the case now.

True. And sure plenty of people have been buying handguns - they have their uses. They’re just not that useful against a modern army.
