My son, who is about to graduate from college with a marketing degree, has an internship at a local museum. He dresses UP

Good move. When I was in corporate, I always dressed a notch above. Until I got burnt out and didn't care anymore :-P

Grandma always told me the clothes make the man.

Bill the Son buys good quality clothes and then takes them to a Vietnamese tailor shop and gets them altered for a better fit. (I've suggested that he talk to them about a bulk deal on made-to-measure shirts, since he loves their work.) One reason I like this is that his grooming standards give me some confidence that he won't fall for a slatternly young woman.

Grandma always told me the clothes make the man.

I'm wearing a skirt and blouse and matching jewelry for a day that features driving my kids back and forth to the pool for swim team, plus a visit to Walmart. I think wearing tidy clothes shows respect for yourself and others and for order in the universe.

Neckties. Any job that requires me to wear one is a non-starter for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the way they look, I even collected them for a while, but I can't stand wearing them. The main reason is my physiology. Even loose, and with collars that are appropriately sized, it feels like I'm going to pass out when I turn my head. So, I look for jobs where I can wear a nice golf-style shirt and no necktie. Kinda hampers my management track, but, oh well. A man's got to know his limitations. Mine's a necktie.

I tried to abide by the saying, “Don’t dress for the job you have; dress for the job you want.” It made sense and I was promoted often. Also, while working in H.R. for many years (God help me!) I read articles in professional journals showing that it’s been proven that the better people dress, the better their performance — across the board, no matter what the job.
