We need to eat less meat. Should the government step in?

Meat consumption in the United States — and across much of the Western world — has reached a level that is unsustainable, both for our planet and for our health. We owe it to ourselves to make a change. Our politicians owe it to us to enable that change.

The average American eats three times as much meat as experts deem healthy, the average European around twice as much. And the emerging economies are quickly catching up: by 2050, global consumption is expected to rise a further 76 percent.

Excessive meat-eating is partly responsible for an epidemic of obesity — now one of the most costly social burdens, according to the consultancy McKinsey. Over-consumption of red and processed meat is contributing to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes and certain cancers.

Life is a terminal condition. It’s just that some of us have a more certain expectation of our expiration date. Lefts are the most joyless, neurotic people on the planet.

.....We need to eat less meat....

NONSENSE!!!! SOME need to eat less meat. Some even need to eat MORE meat (coupled with resistance exercise)!!!!

Most of the problem appears to be due to processed meat, not fresh meat! But the high-carb-low-fat diet prescribed by nutritionists in the 1990s was responsible for the obesity-and-diabetes epidemic from then until today! That diet was pushed by the government!!!!

Nutritionists—especially the glorified dietitians in most health centers—need to have more humility (as we all do). And government needs to GET OFF OUR BACK when it comes to food and nutrition!!!!

Let’s take a look at the realities:

Years ago the CDC said the following:

Do not eat red meat.
Do not eat pork.
Do not eat eggs.
Do not eat butter.
Do not eat bacon.
Do not eat barbeque.
Do not eat cheese.
Do not eat sugar.
Do not eat chocolate.
Do not drink coffee.

As an aside, if all of those things are accurate, then WHY ARE WE STILL HERE? Why have we not all died off?

But now the CDC say:

OOPS! to all of the above!

It turns out that the body actually needs all of those things.

Why would anyone believe anything that any ‘health expert’ says?

I agree with Lewis Black, paraphrased: “No one knows about health and what should and should not be eaten. What you eat might kill the person sitting next to you.”

It all goes back to genes, period, end of story.

I didn't click on the article (sooo tired of popups!), but I confess to eating my share of steaks, chops, ground critter, chicken, and fish.

And, there are many millions people on this fine planet that would pay much just to have my excellent cholesterol, lipids, and other blood levels.

My secret (it's not really a secret) take it wayyyy easy on carbs, and avoid grains and grain products and sugars as if they were poison. (They truly are.)

Atlas Shrugged readers will no doubt recall Ma Chalmers, the dietary expert who saved the country with her soybean crop. Except, you know, for the starvation...

I was wrong when I said you couldn't satirize this stuff.

“Maybe they should try this out with SNAP and WIC first.”

Yeah, I thought that all welfare recipients are fat because they are forced to eat only carbs?

Sorry. I am a carnivore. I am far healthier on a diet of primarily animal protein and fat. Carb rich diets make me lethargic and fat. Not everyone may be like that, but I am. So these one-size-fits-all government should decide bs would kill someone like me.

They’re fat because food deserts, or something. I can’t remember the current ruling class excuse, but I think it’s something to do with lack of access to fresh food. I’ve heard that WIC might be switching from whole milk to 2% or skim. More carbs, less fat. Yeah, that’s going to fix the problem /sarc

I didn't claw and fight my way up the food chain to eat Tofu. The "experts" can go pound their own meat. And, BTW, I grill my steaks Extra Rare.

Should the government step in?

Of course it should! The government should issue us "meat consumption" cards... which have to be punched anytime we buy a meat product. Agents will do random checks of people's meat consumption cards, and failure to get them punched, or over-eating of meat products should lead to prosecution and prison time.

Vote for Hillary and this may become a reality.

Sorry. I eat one meal a day, most times just meat and seasonings consisting of either Salt, BBQ sauce, or Soy Sauce.

Rarely do I eat veggies, and I am most definitely NOT obese!

Objection. Presumptive premise. Assuming facts not in evidence. “We should eat less meat” is an opinion masquerading as an axiom.
