Please help! I need a job in the Tulsa area immediately! In danger of being homeless by sept. 8th!

Posted on 08/17/2016 10:57:18 AM PDT by acad1228

I'm a 54 year old draftsman. I've been unemployed since March 2nd. I've been to 31 job interviews after applying to over 60 companies. No one wants to hire a 54 year-old man who is confined to a wheel chair.

When I was laid off from my job of over 22 years, I finally bit the bullet and filed for disability. I was approved, but I won't start receiving payments until October 26th. My rent on this place is due on Sept. 8th but my last unemployment check won't cover it. My wife and I are both disabled and out of much needed meds.

I'm not some damned bum looking to let the government take care of me. I've worked hard all my life. Since I graduated high school, I've rarely worked less than 40 hours per week. I actually calculated it and I've paid in well over $200,000 in State and Federal taxes.

Please, if anyone knows of a job in the Tulsa area that I could do from a wheel chair, let me know. It will be painful, but it's nothing I haven't been dealing with for over the past ten years.

It doesn't even have to be long term. Just enough to get me through to the end of October.

Praying several times a day. I don't know why I'm in this position. It must be part of his plan. I don't like it, but I have to accept it.

Maybe Job and job is a message I'm supposed to understand.

If you have an IRA or 401k you can roll over, you can take that money out. If you qualify for “hardship,” you can take it out without the normal 10% penalty.

Did the 401k thing when I got let go, but my wife's meds other things ate that up in about 5 months.

I work from home to be able to take care of my wife who is disabled.

I found this website and bookmarked it in case I was ever looking for a job again. Seems legit.

But like everyone else here has said, prayer can and really does work wonders.

Well doesn't sound like he's really looking for a job...just the means to ‘generate income’ until Oct. when he goes on disability.

Looks like his rent's due...so I'd be selling some of my furniture in the front yard if that desperate. I went thru a rough spot many years ago and did exactly that...sold anything that wasn't needed in my front yard and it worked!

The idea was to generate money...I figured if I wasn't willing to sell some of what I had then I wasn't that desperate to begin with.

That would go especially if I needed medication, as seems to be the case here.

What engineering discipline do you draft for?

This is a critical question.

You must know at least one CAD software program, since no one has used a pencil and eraser in the last 30 years.

If you are in Tulsa, I assume you do piping design. Can you use PRO/E Piping?

Or substitute teaching. Or teaching at a community college-for CAD.

I would need a degree for that. I learned drafting at a vocational school and that's not good enough to get a teaching position. I know. I tried.

When I was unemployed in the worst of the recession, I managed to make ends meet by getting part-time work via CRAIG’S LIST. Seriously, it is a great resource.

If you’re out of cash then you need to sell some of your belongings to pay at least for the medication you and your wife need....

As for rent...have you spoken with your landlord?

Are you a white, heterosexual, straight male? If so, that explains the center of your hardship.

You left of Baptist and Republican.

I'm only half white. The other half is Choctaw. But I live in the Creek Nation. And in the Creek nation; if you ain't Creek, you don't count.

And, your church.

Unfortunately drafting jobs have moved to China and India along with the manufacturing plants.

Engineering, design and drawings are mostly done in the U.S. if the company is a U.S. based outfit. All military contractors and companies making what could be dual use items (military or commercial) do all the engineering and manufacturing in the U.S.

No U.S. company wants China to get their grubby mits on the intellectual property that easily.

If relocation is an option, consider NW Arkansas. Walmart supports many related businesses, large and small.

About 20 years ago, I [briefly] worked for an architectural company that had grown from about 20 to 160 in 10 years. Their primary clients were various divisions from Walmart.

Arkansas has one of the lowest unemployment rates and NW Arkansas is booming in every way imaginable.

I live about 30 miles from the Wmt HQ and many from my town work in some type of business that has ties to Walmart [Bentonville] and/or Tyson [Springdale]. When I moved here in 2000, the population was 8,400. Now, it is nearing 15,000.

Do some internet searches on architects in the area. There are dozens of them. Check temp agencies as a start. Check state Job Corp and check things like Craigslist.

Maybe try a temp service. For anything. Even answering phones.

snagajob.com has a posting for an online survey taker in Sapulpa.
Also several host/greeters for restaurants, and ace Cash express needs someone.

Even if his skills are in a different discipline, he might try to get a job as final drafter to draft plans after the designer is done with it which frees up the designer to start a new project.

Also, even if you miss one month rent, that should just start the clock ticking on an eviction proceeding, which often take months. Don’t panic.

Here in Washington state for the last 30 years or so the landlord/tenant law forbids evicting a tenant in less than six months.

As others have sent, check with the temp agencies in your area.

If you are interested in long-term work instead, also sign up at linkedin.com - a networking site for professionals.

My daughter enjoyed working for Alpine Access from home. Until she lost her voice - it was all phone work. They contract with many, many companies, so there are a variety of types of position open.

In past years, I've had luck working through a temp agency then being offered permanent work by their customers.

Best of luck - and will be praying.

“It takes 3 months to evict someone.”

https://www.ok.gov/OREC/documents/Landlord%20and%20Tenant%20Act%20Update.pdf

Check out Sections 131 & 132, above, acad. It mentions a five (5) day notice to quit.
You may have agreed to pay his atty fees in the lease, if he has to sue, so it would be best, I think, to go to the LL and try and work it out ASAP. If you can’t work it out, go to an Okie legal clinic to get some legal advice you can rely on.
