I don’t need air conditioning, and neither do you

It’s time to come out of the closet. Or, more precisely, the sweat lodge.

My family lives without air conditioning, except for one antique, semi-comatose window unit that “cools” the bedroom to approximately the same temperature as Dallas at dusk.

Our house in Philadelphia was built in the 1920s, when people were tough and resourceful. For most of the year, the house is cool and pleasant, as long as there isn’t a mash-up of continuously scorching days and epic humidity, when the air is putrid, stagnant and, if it were a color, would definitely be mustard.

Which would be this summer. Which, so far, is the fourth-hottest summer on record in the Washington area. Emphasis on so far. NASA reports that July was the Earth’s hottest in recorded history. Cheer up, people say to those of us without air conditioning, September’s coming. Except people forget that most of September is still summer.

To save money. I live alone. It doesn’t bother me that much.

You have a point about Houston. I was there two weeks with my dad at MD Anderson. Hottest place I’ve ever visited, and I thought Alabama in August was bad.....

It won’t be anything profound.
They want to take our guns away for the day that us average Joes are sweating profusely while seated on our thrones, repeatedly flushing our lo-flo toilets which have backed up onto the floors of our Fortresses of Solitude because the Dept. of Making Proles Miserable has banned ZEP Root Kill, the sewer interceptor root-killer, because the chemicals made some rats in California a little dyspeptic.

Unless she's going for the "Guess-what-gender-I-am?" look.

A bud of mine from a former life with whom I'd sometimes get in a little mischief with would say about those kind "If you can't tell, then you ain't interested. Avoid them!"

Another Liberal telling me what I don’t need.

The only thing I don’t need are Liberals telling me what I don’t need, all the while using the force of Law to deny me what they feel is unnecessary for me to live my Life.

These people have no clue what Freedom feels or tastes like.

We’ll do without A/C in Texas when they do without heat in NY. At least we produce our own energy to run our A/C.

Well, nobody is forcing her to have air-conditioning. If that’s what she wants to do, I will defend that right. I, for one, enjoy my technology. I do not wish to be a Luddite.

Well, you can survive without a/c (or ancestors did) but it’s not very nice. You won’t die without a/c in most cases as long as you are drinking plenty and take other precautions.

Wrap a wet microfiber cloth around your neck and you’ll stay pretty cool as long as you don’t move around a lot.
Rinse it out every hour or so. Cools your blood down at the artery. You can buy these at sporting goods shops or make your own.

I’ve seen lots of people who work outdoors do this and they seem to get along fine. I’ve tried I playing tennis and it works! If there is any breeze at all you can actually get cold!

Still, a/c is very nice to have.

People should at least know how to survive without a/c in case there is a sustained power outage. Ditto for heat. I believe in the Boy Scout motto.

That’s true, but your bodies also tend to adjust to the conditions you are exposed to all the time. When I was younger and we only had a window unit in the parent’s bedroom, I could tolerate the heat a lot easier. Now, after being accustomed to air conditioning all the time, I can’t tolerate the heat much at all.

My leftist friend Don lives in the DC area.

He is of mixed Italian/Jewish ancestry and actively dislikes air conditioning.

My Democratic neighbors are interesting. The one from upstate New York likes to stay outside in the screen room. His wife, who grew up in Florida, likes to stay in their air conditioned house.

My mother used to work in a place in Florida without air conditioning. She is of Middle Eastern origin and didn’t sweat.

Our house in upstate New York didn’t have air conditioning when we lived there.

Millions of black people lived in the American South their entire lives without air conditioning.

People vary.

I could get by without air conditioning, but lots of my stuff would turn green in Florida.

My Florida house gets by each year with the electric CO2 emissions of about ten cars driven around the Washington Beltway once.

I’m trying to reduce that by shading my house, but trees take time to grow, especially when I’m not allowed by county law to fertilize them from July 1 through September.

My house stretches from East to West. It would be easier to shade if it was oriented 90 degrees differently.

I’d like leftists to live in Houston, Texas from March to October without air conditioning.

Guantanamo is just too nice for them.

Dear Karen Heller,

It is obvious that:

a. you do not live in The Bayous.
b. you were born AFTER the Fall of The Berlin Wall, when educators stopped being that.
c. you actually don’t give a red cent about the living conditions for those that have respiratory problems that are controlled by interior environment control systems.
d. you are much too young to have experienced a major power blackout as has happened in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Go play with your little pink thingie and shut up.

These are the same people who would not mind the elderly and the ill to die.

Bet this woman drives around in an air conditioned car. Does she put ice in her drinks? Does she have a refrigerator? Perhaps she should go back to an old fashioned ice box, too!

We are looking at 109 to 111 today...ugh...

However, I don’t even have the AC on yet....it will come on about 5 pm for a couple of hours. We are lucky that we cool off at night. IF you pay attention, insulate and put natural blinds on windows, plant trees properly...you will need very little AC. It can’t hurt to cut down when we can.

Tell you what, Karen dearie. Anytime you want to know what no A/C is like, come on down to the ranch - we were 116 a few days ago, 108 now, and my livestock can count the days below 100 on one hoof this summer. They have air conditioning, too. Got a problem with that? No? Because they’re animals? um hum.
