We might not also tend to think this way, but I ponder whether even the dogs (sometimes thought of as unclean animals) were more helpful to the beggar than this rich man was. Dogs generally tend to their own wounds by licking at them; there are substances in dog saliva that are helpful to the purpose in spite of their mouth bacteria.
That might bring even another dimension to the story. The Pharisees, the “clean people,” were often unwilling to help those they despised. It is a kind of parallel to a theme of the good Samaritan.
Nice point. I have always found that my animals were very sympathetic to my times of suffering and were a great balm.
