The sad thing is that after King Edward The Confessor died, there were two invasions. Harold took his army to beat off the invasion by Harald Hardrada of Norway.
After that, he rushed to meet the invasion by William with exhausted troops.

There is a Norse saga about Harald Hardrada which is worth reading even if it may not be entirely accurate. It paints William of Normandy as something of a monster.

Never noticed before that someone is stripping clothes off a dead body (maybe chain mail) in the lower part of that picture.

I was looking around for which figure in the image has an arrow in the eye because this is not really depicted in an unambiguous way. When I looked it up I found that this is controversial and the mark in the tapestry described as an arrow may be a repair line. link

Interesting about the “arrow” (?), thanks!

I thought it seemed ambiguous when I first saw it in person many years ago, but it has been described that way in guides so I assumed I just wasn’t attuned to the subtleties of the tapestry arts. They even have postcards of that image with a caption saying it is Harold getting an arrow in the eye. But thanks for the link!!
