Can’t have the plebes thinking for themselves. They might not think the right things.

That would be counter to our First Amendment.

"Digitisation is a disruptive technological force that brings about deep-seated change and transformation in society. Look at the history of the printing press, when this was invented what kind of consequences it had. Or industrialisation, what consequences that had. Very often, it led to enormous transformational processes within individual societies and it took a while until societies learned to find the right kinds of policies to contain this, to manage and steer this. We live in a period of profound transformation. - Merkel
Merkel's is a shallow "progressive" analysis of what America's Founders rightly viewed as enhancements to a free exchange of ideas.
Who do these individuals like Merkel and Obama think they are to imagine, limited by their extremely limited study and understanding of the history of nations, that they or any of their ilk should "contain," or "manage" the technological wonders which enhance and enlarge the abilities of fellow human beings to communicate their ideas, or their God-given rights to "freedom of conscience" and "freedom of expression"--by whatever means available?

They don’t seem to understand something.
The Internet was designed to route data traffic around outages (like a city being nuked).
Censorship gets treated like an outage.
There are some conventions we use to keep things simple & smooth, like a centralized DNS server (the core of what Obama just gave away; network equivalent of the White Pages).
Should censorship attempt to silence access to websites, users just switch from using centralized DNS servers and straightforward routing to the already-well-solved methods of private DNS, VPNs, encryption, alternate inter-network connections/backbones, and other techniques to re-route data and identify destinations.
Think “darknet”. Huge user base, highly active, major underground economy, no way to shut it down, invisible to “public”.

who she accused of hijacking the German spirit for liberty Merkel the Mad™ with her Stalinist upbringing does not have an inkling of a clue what liberty actually means. Her statement is also in direct violation of the German constitution which forbids censorship. She needs to go to prison.
