Two questions. One: Who initiated the call? And two: Did he understand the significance of what he was doing when it happened?
Not sure about the answer to the first question. Ive got a guess about the second.
Donald Trump risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated after speaking on the phone on Friday with Tsai Ying-wen, the president of Taiwan.
Trumps spokesman also confirmed that the call happened. The U.S. maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan but hasnt conducted official diplomacy since the end of Carters administration, as a concession to maintaining good relations with China. Not even Reagan or the cowboy Dubya risked antagonizing the Chinese by breaking with that protocol of ambiguity. Trump speaking to Tsai will be taken as a signal, intended or not, that the U.S. disputes Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan.

It’s about time an American President stuck his finger in the eye of the Chinese communist thugs.
The Taiwan PM initiated the call....according to a Trump Tweet.
Yes...and was probably after his Bolton meeting.
It's too late for me to check the timelines now.
Who made the call only matters to the China.
It really does not matter WHO made the call.
What kind of nonsense is this from Hot Air?
Is Hot Air representing America or communist China?
All the reason why I tuned out of Hot Air too many moons ago.
They are Globalist first then conservatives. I don’t believe in Globalist. They are full of crap.

Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call.
She called.
That’s not necessarily the same as initiating it.
Two. He knew. Of course.
Inside baseball. Prince Rebus is good friends with Stephen Yates. Yates happens to be in Taiwan.
I can’t say enough how great this is that Trump did this.
Allahpundit is a huge never trump guy...HUGE.
Well there you go. That explains it.
The Chinese are saying it’s no big deal. The media and career diplomats are the ones most upset about it.
Glad to know China is saying no big deal.
Yes, the leftists and pundits are having a hissy fit about this call.
The Reds can’t tell anyone who they may or may not speak to. “Diplomacy” or not.
Allahpundit is a massive never trumper. Everything post on Trump he ever does is 100% negative. It’s irritating and it’s probably losing them traffic.
It seems that a lot of people are unable to control their anguish over the Trump victory and in their desparation their true colours are now coming out.
I suspect that the Chinese have more sense than Hot Air.
An American President must be willing to speak to any other nations leader when they reach out. Screw China.
Trump to China - "If you have something to say, you can come to me, and be polite or get sent to the corner."
Who committed the biggest diplomatic blunder?
I hope he goes one step further and has a US Navy ship make a port of call in Kaohsiung.
Maybe Trump should return the bust of Chairman Mao that Obama put in place of the bust of Churchill in the Oval Office...
